In my area, Tervigon spam came late; my gaming buddies and I had no enthusiasm for such boring spam. I gave up 'Nids when 6th made it clear that Flyrant and Terv spam was the only way forward.
I used to run a successful mixed list with 1 Terv, 1 Tyrant, Genies and Gaunts. I met my first Terv spam in a tournament late in 5th, and was overwhelmed by how boring the game was for both of us!

It just seems a shame that our army doesn't seem to be that "unique". As the only one denied allies, transports, and to a lesser extent fortifications etc (we can hide, but we can't play with the guns), coupled with the fluff over recent years being all about "The Time Of Ending", we should have been the only combat-viable army in a shooting edition, or something like that.
I haven't used my Skavenids for 6 months (distracted by Dark Eldar); over the past week I went from planning a blind codex purchase, to wariness, to rage-quitting. My buddies have convinced me not to, so I will tweak my favourite 5th/early 6th list (1 Flyrant, I Terv, 1x10 Genies, 1x3 Hive Guard 1x3 Biovores), adjusting for common sense, and maybe trying a new monster. If a few games go well (ie are fun, I don't mind losing, but hate being frustrated by impotence), I'll buy the codex and try to summon enthusiasm. I was hoping that the enthusiasm would come naturally!
(Edit: CAN we play with the guns now??!!)

The trouble is...I don't believe that the leaders of GW are gamers.
They doesn't like distracting themselves from the boring/scary/confusing world of reality by spending hours painstakingly building and painting models, then entertaining themselves and their friends by pitting their models against each other in a balanced and tactical tabletop game.
As such, they have no idea how casually wrecking internal and external battles is angering, frustrating and disappointing. They seem to have either no connection to forum feedback, or else choose to ignore it.
A committee of The Hive could write an amazing, but fair and balanced codex, which could address the anti-combat issues 6th has, and be full of rich ideas, concepts for models, and would not only please current 'Nid players, but even gather more: everyone loves a monster, now you can BE one!
I'm a lighting engineer for concerts, and I am finding the same thing with new lighting desks: designed by lab geeks, with amazing functionality, but not enough of the designers are touring lampys. If you don't have feedback from end users, you won't end up creating products that end users will be happy with.

Until a few days ago, I was planning on buying the codex, then starting to think about getting my Skavenids back out of their boxes; I anticipated building a few new models, such as the Hive Pit Abomination, for the new combat monster, and some Warp Lightning cannon for the Exocrine. I hadn't actually found any enthusiasm yet, as I am not happy with 40K generally, but a good codex, some kick-ass new units, and a general buff to combat would have garnered my enthusiasm, I'm certain.
That's not going to happen. I will download the codex, just to confirm the leaks, but that's it. No £30 book, no new Skaven models.
To be honest, the game has gone so awry that if I wasn't eagerly awaiting £150 worth of sexy Raging Heroes girls for my Dark Eldar proxy army, I would have given up on 40K by now.
X-Wing is better balanced, and more tactical. Malifaux is better supported, with better models, and a great gaming system. Dropzone Commander looks hot, there are some beautiful zombie games out, and some amazing board games.
My Skavenid money is going elsewhere. Someone call me when a gamer gets back in charge at GW ;-)

The big thread also states that the "Mummy's Dead" radius is now 12", so no keeping them in the 6"-12" band to get Synapse without risk.

Monstrous creatures can only fire UP TO 2 weapons, even if they have 3 Old codex specifically allowed the Thorax Swarm to be fired in addition. P82, "Thorax Swarm" entry. If the Biovores' and Spore Mines' template is down from the large to the small, that's a big difference; a barrage of 3 large could usually deal with a 5-man Dev/Long Fang squad (not destroy, but halve them); now not to much. (Ninja'd by Malebranche and Jackedup!)

I did my whole Skaven-counts-as-Tyranids army using Army Painter Leather Brown undercoat; I then used the washes range, mostly Devlan Mud for fur, skin, timber etc, mixing with other washes to get variation. 20 Termagants/Clan Rats would be done in an evening.
My current project, a bright red pirate army based on Dark Eldar has all been done with AP's Pure Red, which explodes off the models beautifully.
I am not good at painting. I don't enjoy it. My aim is to get to tabletop standard as quickly as possible. For this, coloured primer is awesome, removing a big chunk of the basecoat painting.
I tried AP's dip, and didn't like the result: too gloopy, loss of texture, and the gloss finish then needs to be matt varnished. Getting the hang of sloshing washes and glazes around is much easier, I find.
TL:DR, if you are looking for tabletop quality, and your army has a majority colour, coloured primer is a huge time saver.

I am excitedly re-reading my Skaven codex! My Skavenids have spent the past six months in their box, partly because I have been concentrating on my Dark Eldar pirate girls, and partly because I only have one Tervigon/Screaming Bell, and didn't want to build more.
I have started going through my Skaven bitz box, and am looking forward to deciding which new models I want to build proxies for.
I have avoided rumour threads, and probably won't follow any until I get my codex next week, but then will be looking earnestly at Hive Pit Abominations, more Dragons with ratty riders.
I have also started visiting the forum "TheUnderEmpire" again, for modelling and painting inspiration.

As I am eagerly awaiting re-launching my Skaven-Counts-As-Tyranids, I have virtually no interest in the fluff, other than to give context for the powers and rules. I am looking forward to building a Hive Pit Abomination for use as one of the big new beasties; I am hoping that they have fixed Harpies so that my Black Dragon gets some exercise, and I am hoping that dakkafexen are more viable, as I can build some cool catapults/balistae.
I will eventually go back and read the fluff properly, but unless they retcon Cruddace's atrocities, I can't summon much enthusiasm for it.

Check out wooden laminate flooring shops (or big DIY stores that sell it too); a pack of damaged ones will be cheap, or even free, and you get an easy-to-work flat panel, complete with grained texture.

My snake managed to force open the door of her vivarium, and escaped. I found her a day later sleeping with her coils through the windows of a manufactorium and a ruin, and couldn't persuade her out without damage! Eventually I put her and the scenery into her vivarium, and waited until she left the building!

6th is fast, and our codex is 5th. Unless someone really drops the ball for with the new codex, we should get some mechanic-breaking rules that allow us to go faster: 6+D6 assault, maybe, or charge after running.
Most armies that have access to assault vehicles pay for it, either with fragile vehicles and low armour(so a blown up Trukk or Venom really hurts your squad), or pay a lot for it (Terminators in a Raider being 1/3 of your points in one blob)
