Question for the 5th ed' players...

So here's a question: how long did it take for Tevigon spam to become ubiquitous after the release of the 5th edition codex?

Mind you some people grabbed onto it right off the bat, but not everyone was signed up from the get go.

The reason I ask is I can't help but wonder what people might come up with in this new codex. Don't get me wrong, it'll probably be another mono build, as seems to be the 'Nids fate for the last 3 editions, but regardless, it will at least be a functioning build.

It was a few months. It seemed EVERYONE was crying/complaining/tantruming about making more kill points for your opponent, than doing any good.

Honestly, while the codex is bad "now", in a month or two we'll forget there was an old codex with spores, and doom and such. Sucks that it will be a mono build, but there well be some strong army lists coming up.

In my area, Tervigon spam came late; my gaming buddies and I had no enthusiasm for such boring spam. I gave up 'Nids when 6th made it clear that Flyrant and Terv spam was the only way forward.

I used to run a successful mixed list with 1 Terv, 1 Tyrant, Genies and Gaunts. I met my first Terv spam in a tournament late in 5th, and was overwhelmed by how boring the game was for both of us!

I remember people running double and triple Tärv pretty much right off the bat, and it was only a couple of months after the release that I had people in a Tournament expressing shock that I wasn't running two.

It really got kicked up a notch with the way they interacted with the 6th Ed Psychic Powers, tho.

Maybe, I really don't know. We could find something or we could just have a mono build that's barely competitive. Right now it looks like the tyranids will be hard to play, but we could find some neat ticks.

And on the tervigon stuff about straight away at my local store. People jumped on to tervi spam really quick.

They really took off in my area when the model got released. Before that I think that there were maybe 4 ultra competitive guys who had them in their army and one person who just liked to make one of everything in the codex.

There is nI Tau and Eldar mono build. They each have a lot of good units to choose from. You could ban 2-3 units from each dex, and they would still be top tier.

This is right on the money.

The 5th edition codex was almost fully leaked weeks in advance of the release. Even before the book hit the shelves people were expressing interest in a Terv-heavy strategy, and predicting that 1-2 Tervigons would find their way into nearly every list. People were aware of it right away, and I'm confident I could go back in time on Warseer and find those actual discussions from 2010!

After 6th edition gave them Biomancy (and iirc made Kill Point games fewer and farther in between) things went into full gear.

I'm sure a lot of people who may have favoured the strategy never actually fielded those lists, because of the late release of the model, but as a concept it was present and accounted for since the earliest moments of the 5th edition Tyranid paradigm.

I really don't think it will take more than a month or two for most effective strategies to be ruled in/out with this codex. There will always be new ideas cropping up here and there, but not likely any will dethrone the early champ unless an FAQ, supplement, edition change, or other new rules shake things up.

Right now Flyrants with heavy support and fast attack spam are taking an early obvious lead. Particularly Crones and Harpies.

I'm probably going to go with 2 flyrants, some warriors, 3 crones, some termagants, a firestorm redoubt, some biovores, and a pair of mawlocs for a while. See how it goes. I actually had a hard time trimming my wishlist down to my area's standard 1850. Granted that was largely because I am spamming FMCs.

They didn't become ubiquitous until 6th edition pushed them into the "head and shoulders better than anything else available" category, but you saw at least 1, usually more in most lists from pretty soon after the codex hit. Their utility was obvious more or less from the get-go.

Wonder what the 6th ed mono build will look like. I'm hoping I can use my unbuilt 'Fexes to pull it off.

I take no interest in finding unique solutions to win a broken game, for me occam's razor is fun and valid.

So what I'm just hoping is that what ever models I need to build to make that army are fun to make, as that's my primary interest in 40k.

I avoided Tervigon spam at first because it was boring, but I nabbed a carnifex kit and custom built my own as soon as I got the codex because it was too tempting not to play with at least 1. I can only think of 1 or 2 games it didn't make it into my lists, and I usually went with a slightly different list every time I played. It wasn't until I was losing nearly 80% of the time that I broke down and ran 2 - by then the kit was out and I had all but given up on my 40 genestealers so I bought the new kit and went with the yawn fest - never did run more than 2, only because I didn't have enough termagant models.

Once 6th ed came out and Biomancy was on the table I would load up on 3 powers and every list I made had 2 tervs and my Flyrant in them, boring as it was that was all I could do to put up a fight.
