Idle thoughts - my Swordrant has not been doing very well in general. Going against BT and DG, he's faced problems with being unable to secure kills reliably and not surviving retaliation.
Against BT he hit a brick of VVs, which get 2+ from SS and mini trans from BT. He needed the +d3A to secure that kill - which I did, and gave him +1ap to ensure he kills the next unit he charges. But he just died on the backswing to a Crusader unit.
Against DG I wanted to run him into Terminators but couldn't make the distance- maybe I played it too aggressively, but I ran him into a PBC instead (the nearby character had No Rerolls and he had HI on the Terminators which I couldn't reach. In hindsight, maybe should have gone on the character anyway since it was just shooty Terminators). Since he didn't have a damage roll, I thought the new strat doesn't work well, so I tried for just reroll wounds to break through the PBC which obviously didn't.
However, it not occurs to me that the new Strat for +1/+1/+1 actually DOES help quite a bit vs Vehicles.
The +1 to hit doesn't, and the +1D also doesn't- had considered using Maw-Claws instead, but without the WLT for consistent more A and no pierce invuln, its too high risk. But with Swordrant base murder size, we're looking at D5 for every 5s to wound vs vehicles, and with reroll wounds, very high chance of scoring those 5s (when you're fishing for 4s, anyway).
The only catch really is that it's a 3cp combination, which really hurts when you already spend nearly 8cp on T1 consistently.
Alternative views are to remove the swordrant completely and replace with something else like utility/shooting or scoring, but I'm really uncomfortable with having only 2 melee units for a CS army. Other than another Haruspex, I do not see anything with great appeal for melee (ignoring FW which is expensive and limited in target choicez), and we do still need access to the 3 CS spells. We COULD go a unit of TG, tag them with a Broodlord for Shadow Mastery, reroll all hits to compensate their -1 to hit, and Adaptation to ignore ap-1/-2 for an excessively thick brick of 2+/5++/5+++ -1hit for midfield contest. Damage output is not comparable to a Haruspex, nowhere near, but is possibly higher than an buffed Swordrant. Is definitely way tankier as well.
I've tested TG in the past and have not liked it all THAT much - 4+ to hit reroll into TRANSHUMAN and invukd still screws the maths. And it also tanks HARD into Custodes with their No Rerolls hijinks.
Anyway, idle rambling thoughts over. Should probably give that Trygon Prime a try for fallback shoot charge, although getting it into range of a harpy seems like a tall order.
