If the orks would be able to wreck the monolith's core, and destroy the portal, and then add some engines of their own, and wheels to it (like in the picture), than they can of course loot it. Orks can loot anything!Wreck the monoliths core? *facepalm* what part of discharge it's energies do you not understand. Ork: "Maybe if we smash it up, it'll work for us?!" Second Ork: "Yeah!" *smashing* *Enormous explosion of built up gauss and particle energy, tearing anything within half a mile to pieces.* Ork that didn't die: "What 'appened, the big box is gone?" Looting a fex is understandable, humans have been taming animals for millenea and once severed from the hive mind, it simply becomes a big dumb animal, so looting a fex is possible, but any necron vehicles.. NO!

Necron tombs have everything aside from spyders locked down tight, youd have to be able to cut through like 8 metres of living metal before you could remove a single destroyer.

With enough explosives and burnas you can get trough even 8m of living metal. And what if the orks found a broken monolith that the necrons were unable to recover? Heck, what if the monolith core was not destroyed by the orks, but they blocked of the portal, and all it's weapons were destroyed? What if the tomb that this particular monolith was from was destroyed, the monolith lost contact with all other necrons and ran out of energy? There are so many ways to loot a monolith!

Heres my thought on monolith looting: In this world there is no place for logic, common sense or story continuity... this... is... homebrew! For every "no they cant" there are two ,more "yes they can". The real question you should be asking yourselves is when the Tau and the Tyranids join forces what kind of monstrosity will be born? (see salamut's post on page 1)

Guys, you're all forgetting one important fact:
Orks are ORKS. They're born with an innate if somewhat rusty knowledge of machines and creation and no small amount of luck. Orks could probably loot a Tomb World with the right circumstances, numbers and luck. Doesn't tend to happen very often, but hey, the fact that they can make weapons work via sheer willpower alone (The Imperium can't get captured Ork technology to work) and can make their spaceships operate with a full life-support system by simply believing it further evidences the fact that they don't operate on the same level of understanding other races do.

speaking of contradictory fluff, I could have sworn that in one of the gaunts ghosts books, Gauntgot an ork vehicle to work and succeeded in driving it, even though that's supposedly impossible. (see above post)

Orks can carjack monoliths. Orks are orks, and thus, it would be extremely orky to steal a monolith and make it a looted wagon.
Must be tempermental as all hell, though.
Knowing orks, they see a necron Monolith, and they say "Doesn't have enough bombs tied to it. And it isn't painted red. Lets fix dat."

Well, actually orks make their weapons work "trough manual dexterity", without the help of the machine spirit, which is next to inconceivable for a tech priest (there is some talk about it in the 3rd edition codex). Ork technology do often work, although it's also quite unreliable at times. And considering the fact that orks quite often use their guns to bash their enemies heads, it's not strange that some of them break. This would explain why a lot of those captured ork guns don't work. GW has moved away from the "ork guns works thanks to ork willpower" thing. And don't forget that we have the armageddon ork hunters. Those are imperial guardsmen who have fought against orks for so long that they have begun to emulate them, and use their technology. Ruleswise, these were guardsmen with basic ork weapons (sluggas/choppas & shootas).
