So, I got myself a second box of zoanthropes, and while getting the parts out of the sprues, I was thinking:
If I kitbash in some leftover bits from other things, is there a good way to get both units out of the box without needing mad greenstuff skills?
The following parts within the kit are shared between the two and would therefore need to be substituted somehow:
1. The tail section (which is also what it stands on the base with)
2. The tiny bottom-most pair of claws
3. The small front section of the torso
4. The vents on the back (zoans use 2 pairs, toxis use all 3 pairs)
For the tail section, I was wondering if using gargoyles as a base might work out. If I take the majority of the gargoyle body and just cut off the back, it might take care of the entire thing already. In that case, I would just need to see how well I can get the parts to fit together. The problem them becomes that for both of the two units the model's weight would be very unevenly distributed on the flying base, so it might just fall over. But it could just work.
Otherwise, sculpting just the tail out of greenstuff seems reasonable to do, but getting that signature boney texture on the "hip"/torso section is a lot harder.
For the vents on the back, I do not remotely have faith that I would be able to make good-looking vents from scratch, and they are not exactly common leftover bits, either. For the venomthropes, they are thematically pretty relevant to have, too. But for the zoanthropes, they do not really matter, conceptually. But the models would still look kinda weird with a totally plain back. So I thought, maybe I can just use more or less generic spikey bits from the trygon and/or tyrannofex box, glue them on there pointing upwards, and it might end up looking totally fine.
Anyone here tried something like this before? Even if not, any thoughts on the general ideas?
