I am mostly a lay person. I play cassual. Have consumed many videos on this new codex. And I had game with it yesterday VS Tau.
I do not believe there are mantarory units per say. Because traditionally many good lists in warhammer throw generaleties out the window and are very focused. For instance while a lot of people are saying tervigants are bad perhaps there is an excelent tervigon and tervigants list. Also any list that is based around having objective secure monsters will value their choise very differently. Perhaps you even take a spearhead detachment and drop troops all together.
With that beeing said, here are general guide lines for most general builds.
- You need troops. Best troop is warrior. Even better in leviaten, less good in other lists. He is durable, cheaper then gaunts. I also think they are OK offensively. You can probably take more then 3 in a group if you want to cook rock soup on them. They are also good for synaptic link chains.
- You want synaptic imperative abilaties. You might not need 5 (you can only use each once) but you probably want the neuronthrope one. If you also have a warrior you have exploding 6's in melee. They are some of the best. Also note that late game synaptic links are harder to maintain.
- The neuronthrope might be the best psyker in the game. Seems mandatory. Consider synpotic tendril on him. The Zoanthropes might not need it (although getting big smites is easier on 3d6 +3) but some other psyker might. Resonance barb goes somewhere in the tyranid list, but this might be overkill here.
- Long ranged support. You need something shooty in your list with high strenght. To quote Magnete "What are you going to do, scratch them with your claws?" This slit is more open ended. Exochrine is the gold star poster boy. Other possabilaties are tyranofex. Hive guards (they might have som traction with either gun.) More Zoanthropes. (Smita polusa. Although they do get pricy.) Carnifexes with venom cannon. Dakka carnifexes. Some hybrid fex. Walking hive tyrant can also fill this slott. (Although why is he not just a Tyranofex at that point.) Supricingly heavy venom cannon Hapry can fit the bill. Although she is hard to hide and is a real glass cannon. Her bombs are great. Perhaps start her in reserve? Perhaps even an insane 9 man warrior blob can shoot venom cannons? Anyway, you need some ranged weapons.
- You probably want some form of venomthrope in your list. They fight with a good number of attacks. Can give fight last and can hide in melee. They move 8" with fly as infantery. And they have good solid defensive buff. Very cheap for 105 points.
- Reach. Do you want reach in your list? Otherwise you will just be running across the table with your claws (in a cloud of venomthrope poison perhaps?) or walk slowly across while shooting your guns. Flying hive tyrant is your reach unit. Give him melee weapons. Perhaps raveners can move fats enough. Trygons are very squishy for their cost. Anything that can deepstrike gets a much better chance of charging if you trigger charge lure. +1 to charge can help a lot. The passanger relic can help a lot. Perhaps the flyers also can reach, but they are truly glass cannons. Perhaps genestealers can help here.
- If you are taking a critical number of hive tyrants, like perhaps even one, consider tyrant guard.
- Malaceprir bomb. A lot of people think the Malaceptor bomb is very good.
To sum up my must have units:
Warriors (minimum squads)
Neuronthrope (synaptic tendril warlord trait)
Zoanthropes (one group of 3)
2 Exocrhines
Venomthrope (one group of 3)
Hivetyrant with wings
Tyrant guard (one group of 3)
Malaceptor.
I hope this has been to some help to you.
