Advice for helping friend in first game

Hey Hive,

I have a friend who is looking to get into 40k, and wants to do a test match. I haven't really played much in 8th but I know the rules enough to get a match in. So I was wondering what advice/suggestions everyone could give me to help setup a nice intro match.

I have my own Nids which I would use and have a decent Ultramarine army (Don't own any primaris and don't own any Marine related codex as of 8th). So I was wondering what may a solid solution for me. I know there is unit information in different army building apps. I want to keep it as simple as possible though.

I did the same not long ago actually. We just did a simple 1000 points tyranids vs ultramarines.

Keep it simple. Just work on the basic rules really - we just played turn by turn with me helping him and not doing anything too nasty. We also pretended strategems didn’t exist for now just to get the basics down. Did still use CP for re rolls.

Both were fluffy lists. Most of the marines was the box set primaris stuff plus some other stuff I had like some whirl winds, a predator (because he loved the idea of tanks). I took some gaunts, hive guard, Tervigon and a few other fluffy things.

Was good fun. Showed how movement works, showed him how shooting works. Had an assault phase or two but in the end player a basic mission from chapter approved too (where you hold objectives each worth 1 point except one that’s 2 points depending on the d6 roll).

Agreed on the above. I'd recommend only using the three base strategems (reroll, combat interrupt, fearless). I'd also say don't use chapter tactics or doctrines for the first game.

As far as lists, just make a couple of lists with cool models and have fun!

A walkrant, a carnifex, Some warriors and griblies, maybe avoid stealers game 1, as the speed can throw newbies, rippers to introduce deepstrike, or a tryg instead of the fex maybe...pour a squad of hormies out...

As people have already mentioned:

Smaller points game

Use the index rules (except points, or *gasp* use power levels)

Limit stratagems/relics/warlord traits to only basic ones

Have two playable lists prepared
