Can anyone beat this 1 turn Doom move?

So I've been playing with Doom for my last three games and holy (please do not swear) he is just awesome so this is an example of how awesome.
I drop the doom right in between a unit of grey knights and a unit of seraphim and saint celestine, and a nemesis dread knight. So those units make a 3D6 leadership check and taking wounds everything over with no regular saves. He loses 3 grey knights, saint celestines unit fails by one, take an involn save on saint and she fails so takes 1 wound. Then he freaking rolled a 16 on 3D6 with the dreadknight so he has to take 6 5+ involn saves and fails all but 1, having only 4 wounds he is removed. At this point Doom of Malentine is up to 10 wounds making his blast weapon STR10 AP 1 so he shoots at unit in a bastion and gets a hit. I rolls a 4 which modifies to a 6 on the building damage table and wrecks the building. So the guys on the top all have to jump out making a dangerous terrain check on 3 or lower with no saves. All but coteaz and one monkey live from that jump. Basically the game was over at that point.
Plus on the his next turn saint celestine stands up hoping to assault something but ended up to close to Doom and was stripped of here two recovered wounds agian.

The doom seems to love dread knights for breakfast. Mine leeched one with full wounds in a single turn in 2 games this far. In my first game against Grey Knights it killed up to 1250 points by itself. Not in a single turn, but it was totally amazing nonetheless^^

All the grey knights I play have warp quake making doom useless

Everytime I put the Doom in range of Mephiston he rolls a 15 or something equally ludicrous and gets killed outright.

Of course other times I can put all the odds in my favour by having Deathleaper lower a Bloodthirsters Ld to 7 and then sic the Doom on him, which inevitably results in 0 wounds caused.

Such is life with the random chance which is the Doom I suppose.

Last weekend Doom soloed 2 riptides. One via the 3d6 and the other to close combat two turns later.

Yeah, I only run the doom against people who are super confident because they've found a nasty deathstar. There's a bloke who refuses to play me because I beat him all the time because if we comes, I run the Doom. He runs Draigo wing and in the once-in-a-blue-moon he gets defeated he tends to complain that the opposing codex is over powered. He's a *crow caw* though. I used against jetbike seer council, nob bikers, swarmlord deathstar, stuff like that. I run him like 1/30 games though because he is really nasty.

Doom can be so lethal if you get lucky, here is mine (ok it was against the tau who have bad LD);

I podded my doom next 3 teams of 12 fire warriors and two teams of 3 crisis suits. Each fire team lost 6 warriors, and the crisis team lost two suits each just to spirit leech. (this was against my best friend btw, in a LGS tournament) two of the surviving fire warrior teams fled, only one stood its ground, crisis teams stood their ground (what was left of them anyway). My doom then proceeded to shoot a nearby devilfish carrying 12 fire warriors, which I hit, penetrated, and exploded, that single explosion wiped out his entire squad due to some bad luck rolling for armour saves. This single turn won me the game as he had hardly any troops to hold objectives.

Doom *can* be deadly, but so can a Vindicator.... yet no one says the VIndicator is OP. That same S10 AP1 large blast... will also go pretty far to destroy Draigo Wing (or anything else).


I have been doing with skipping Doom and putting Zoans in a pod; 3xPsy shriek means instead of hitting 3 units, you can his the same unit 3 times. IMagine that Draigo wing having to roll 3d6 3 different times? Plus it has a 12" range, and you can give each one a back up power (biomancy..??)
Costs almost twice as much, but double the range and 3 'shots' instead of 1 per unit within 6". OTOH, no Cataclysm and only happens on your turn.....so still debating...

Also you can't take psychic defenses versus Spirit Leech; it just happens.
(Which I admit is not great game design, but there you are.)
Psychic Shriek falls under the problem Zoanthrope shooting always has, you have to make the psychic check, you have to roll to hit, you have to beat their Ld etc etc. If they're GKs or Eldar your testing on 3D6, or at -1/-4Ld. And you have to get past DtW.

I've recently been taking a sort of middleground by foregoing the Dooms catalcysm power and giving it Psychic Shriek instead. That way you still get the reliability of Spirit Leech but also the increased range and cover ignoring goodness of Psychic Shriek.

There is no doubt, Doom does a better job at being Doom than 3 zoans do. In fact, Doom/psy shriek will do about the same damage against a single target that includes a psyker. (And should do more damage against multiple targets)
The advantage Zoans have is flexibility.
If the enemy has land raiders, or very little walking troops; you can pick different powers.
Once you land, and the enemy moves away, zoans can switch to back up powers with longer range. (Assuming you rolled those)
It takes 9 S8 wounds to kill them all, not 3. (though Doom probably does better against S7 and below shooting.

Not sure if those advantages are enough....

Oh believe me, I could pretty happily take Zoans, Doom, Yealers, Hiveguard in just about every list I make.....

I've had a single game since 6th where I managed to roll Iron Arm on Doom (I was actually aiming for Enfeeble spam) which was the single most ridiculous game I have ever played. Unless your opponent has plenty of Jaws equivalent options, that beast is not going down. It pretty much solo'd an entire half of the battlefield and ended up sheparding all of my opponent's infantry (he was playing Hybrid Guard) into a nice multi-chargable bundle.

Aside from that Blue Moon instance, Doom isn't a garunteed success regardless of what you manage to roll for his powers. He can be devastating when used right (especially in conjunction with Deathleaper if you happen to be running the two) but I don't consider him the best Elite choice we have. I normally run him as a psyche out tactic to affect my opponent's deployment but, when it comes down to it, a single missile launcher can ruin his day and you're not always going to have a massive first turn deployed impact with him. Personally I feel my Ymgarls are the ones who do the most for my army in game.

I would honestly have to say the best Doom run I have had was playing against another nid player. Doom dropped down in front of a fortress build and was able to tag a tervigon, a t-fex and my opponents swarmy. Outright killed the tervigon and the swarmlord and t-fex were both dropped down to 1 wound a piece as the rest of my army charged in. (best thing about the game was the fact that in my opponents turn he dropped his doom right beside the massive multicombat that I was trying to finish up and on the shooting phase for that turn the 2 dooms combined killed off everything in the area with the exception of one another.

i have a Doom as well, but so far he hasnt done much. Thats mainly because I do not currently have a spore pod to put him in. I am making one though, so soon enough ill be able to wipe out stuff. GUARDSMAN BEWARE!
