Anti-Imperial Guard list Help!

Hey all!

I'm going up against my friend who plays a mech heavy imperial guard list..

He fills the tanks with guys with plasma guns too.

and he likes fliers

he has somewhere around 15-18 plasma guns in his army

and around 11 tanks.

This spells death for my usual All comer list.

If anyone could help me create a list/tactics to take this down, that would be appreciated.

I have about 6000 pts of tyranids, so I can create any list you come up with. Thanks!

how many of these tanks are real tanks, not transports?

I would say 4 of them are transports, and then a few large template tanks, and a basilisk or two.

oh, and the list we are playing is 1850

You'll get more respons on this if you post a list yourself first, with a couple of tactics you have in mind to beat this army.

Then ask if people want to have a look at making it better.

Zoanthropes to pop Transports Biovores to kill the squishies,

Carnifex in spore with CC hide behind the spore, then assault next turn or upgrade with Bioplasma and have a nice S7 ap2 attack on the rear armour.

Lanesend, I have this battle today, so I wanted to put it in both tactics and lists, (because it feels like a bit of both)

I'll keep that in mind for next time!

THe usual list I run is as follows and I actually almost always win when I play people. I've beaten his Eldar, and Grey Knight lists everytime with this list, but I'm scared of this plasma/tank spam list nonsense. Feels very anti nids.

HQ:
Flyrant w/ 2x Twin Linked BL Devourers, old adversary - 285

Elites:
Ymgarl x8 - 184
Hive Guard x3 - 150
Doom of Malantai + Pod - 130

Troops:

18 devilgants in pod - 220
20 Vanilla Gants - 100
Tervigon /tox/adren/claws/extra power - 220
Tervigon /tox/adren/claws/extra power - 220

Fast Attack: Gargoyles x 20/tox - 140

Heavy:
Trygon - 200

Total: 1849

Usual Tactics: Gargoyles screen anything I want to have a coversave, hive tyrant flies around with the tervigons which give the gaunts old adversary, tox, and adrenaline making them very killy.

I try ot have the hive tyrant up where I want to drop my devilgants by the turn they arrive so that I can get 54 shots with old adversary.

I burrow the trygon and have him come up behind tanks to shoot at them in the rear-armor and the ymgarls pop out and assault whoever comes out of the tanks that I pop. I use the spore pods to slap rear armor too and sometimes get lucky popping them that way.

by the time my main wave reaches CC they are too busy dealing with the drop nids and tyrant and usually get wiped out. (I keep spawned gants on objectives back in my zone and just let them lurk there)

So! He likes to have a big parking lot of tanks and large templates and plasma as well as 1-2 fliers coming in turn 2 or 3..

I just want to have the best chance available, I feel like he's tailored so I would like to do the same with my all comer list.

^ Yeah, I think you should do OK with that list.
Keep the pressure on the plasma vets with little gribblies, so he has to fire that expensive plasma into them. Follow up with the monsters.

Maybe you can keep catalyst on 1 or both of the tervigons. FNP will be important for the big guys.

If you can reach them, try to do a multi assault with the Ymgarls. It will cost you a few attacks, but it will keep you in combat untill the opponent's assault phase. And thus safe from a round of shooting.

For the flyers, try to position your Flyrant so that he can start shooting the flyers in the back as soon as they come in.

All in all a difficult list to play against. Especially if he goes with a couple of Vendetta's.

Battle was successful!

I placed my 2 objectives inside ruins within 12 inches of each other in my zone, he placed his 3 objectives, 2 in the middle, 1 in his deployment. (His plan was for me to hang out int he middle so he could shoot me as I tried to get objectives, because he knows i love objectives. Which backfired when he got totally tied up by the wave of tyranids hitting his parking lot, giving me 2 free objectives)

I lined up my units and used as much cover and blocking LOS as possible, he got first turn and bombed the hell out of me, I lost most of my unit of gargoyles and did surprisingly well first turn.

Come my 1st turn I cast feel no pain on my MC's and Iron arm on the tyrant. Kept moving up the board using cover as much as possible. and flew my tyrant off the board to hide it from his fliers that I was expecting turn 2.

TUrn 2 came and he shot the hell out of my army again, went down to half wounds on the tervigons but this time had FNP and cover and did quite well.

on my turn 2 I got lucky and ALL my reserves came in (Trygon, doom, devilgants, ymgarls, Tyrant)

and proceeded to pop tanks, and destroy everyone who came out of it. and almost tabled him by turn 4.

By end of the game I had the 2 objectives in the middle and the 2 at my home end. I had first blood, slay the warlord and linebreaker as well for a total of 7 points, to his 0.

It was my first time facing guard and they are not as hard as I thought. I stuck with my regular tactics and it went very very well!

Yeah Gaurd shooting can be horrible, but as soon as you get them in close combat they die like gaunts.

How did you get the FNP? With Catalyst or did you roll on Biomancy?

I roleld on biomancy and got lucky on both tervigons.

Though from now on I may just use the Codex powers so I can guarentee FNP.

Does that sound like a better idea?

If I want to rely on FnP I always use the codex power catalyst. It's got a nice bonus, too! It doesn't has to be casted at the beginning of your movement phase like blessings, just anytime in the movement phase. So its effective range is mostly 18" and you can even cast it with Tervigons outflanking via Hive Commander!

Congratulations for the win! My fellow likes plasma, tank and flyerspam with his IG, too. I've lost one time against him, but until now didn't competed him again. Quite the contrery he is my teammate in our next 2vs2 tournament^^

Mech Guard can be annoying a bit, but as long as you put the pressure on them, they are no match for the 'Nids!

I find having powers is one of the most amazing things to have against Guard. Iron Arm, and Endurance can really put a damper in their day.

For transports you want Hive guard or Zoanthropes.
For flyers you want Flydakkarants.
For infantry you want Tervigons.
