Challenges and outside help

Say the Swarmlord challenges a Chaos Prince. The Prince accepts the challenge and the two square off. Fate Weaver is hovering nearby and normally, as it's my understanding, would be able to assist the Prince by allowing all sorts of re-rolls. Would Fate Weaver's re-rolling buff apply to the challenge even though rules wise no other models are supposed to be able to be involved in the fight?

Yup that's not a problem.
So long as the Lord is within the 6" (12"?) range of Fateweavers effects he still gets to re-roll any failed saves.

The wording on abilities such as that is 'any model within X inches'
The Lord is still within X" even if he's in a challenge ergo he still gets the effects of the aura.

Being in a challenge really only stops other models from attacking into the challenge, effects from, for example, banners, warlord traits and similar still apply as normal.

That's what a thought. The ruling works both ways of course, allowing Swarmy to buff a Warior Prime or Trygon Prime with Preferred Enemy before they launch into a challenge.

Also, swarmlord vs fateweaver buffed prince would be hilarious, just saying.

Prince fails his save? Fateweaver lets him reroll.
Prince makes his save? Swarmlord forces him to reroll.
And since in general, there is no rerolling of rerolls, the second roll would stand, no?
So basically, the first roll is completely meaningless.

Normally in such a contradictory scenario you would just discount both rules and have the Lord make a single save with no re-rolls either way.

in tournys ive had it ruled the way von stated. ive only had the issue with eldrad though, but should be the same as fateweaver.

Ya the rules don't cancel each other out they both work lol. Which is always funny. If u make the save u reroll if u fail u reroll lol

Effectively, they do cancel each other out. You roll your Saves, then you pick up both all the successes and all the failures (so all the dice) and roll them all again. Might as well just skip the first roll, since it's utterly meaningless.

Not really with a 5+ save they are more likely to fail previous saves then they are to make new one

But the thing is, on their side they have something letting them reroll failed saves, and on your side you have something making them reroll successful saves. So the odds of them rerolling the first save are actually 100% regardless of what their actual save is.

Oh ya i totally admit it is odd they should just say they cancel each other out and leave it at that. Also would make the game go by faster lol
