Playing boneswords and sything talons on Tyrant

HI all,

Hope this isn't too noob a question.

I've always played my tyrants with TL Dev and one set of sything talons.

I'm just starting with 6th ed and will have a TL Dev tyrant with wings for some flier capacity.

But I will also run a Tyrant on the ground with sything talons and bonesword and lashwhip.

So here's my question. With my 4 attacks do I get to reroll all 1's because of the sything talons AND also have all wounds count as if they were from the bone sword (leadership test or ID)?

To elaborate, tyranids don't make their attacks with their weapon like other armies do. You aren't attacking with your Bonesword Scything Talons or Lash Whip, you're attacking with a Hive Tyrant, that has Scything Talons, Bonesword and Lash Whip. This means that tyranids gain all the bonuses from their wargear, but don't get extra attacks from having multiple close combat weapons.

You should swap out the Scything Talons for a different biomorph. Rerolling all missed to hits is good, but only 1's? You would be better off paying the 15 for 1 set of Twinlinked-devourers with brainleech worms. Those plus the Lashwhip Bonesword allow you to be a fright to fight in both close combat and at range!

^Well, that depends.
If you plan on running towards the enemy and dealing as much damage as possible in CC, Laswhip, bonesword and Sything Talons are your best build. Also, ScyTals are free.

But TBH, I wouldn't use a second Tyrant just for assault capability. If you invest in him, it may be better to give him Old Advesary. This buff will also give the Tyrant the re-rolls on 1's plus all units within 6". Leaving another set of arms for the devourer.

Make sure the second Tyrant has Armored Shell - 2+ saves are hard to beat in close combat now.

Old Adversary on the assault tyrant (and those around it) also act as a great substitute for ScyTals and Toxin Sacs - Since the HT will be hitting largely on 3s and wounding on 2+ most of the time and you can reroll 1s on missed hits and wounds. Not sure if the rerolls on 1s apply to vehicle penetration results though - anyone know? The BRB says 'To Wound' but I think vehicles only count as 'Armor penetration'.

Thanks for all the feedback and elaboration!
I got the model used and that's how it's kitted out, so that's how I play it usually.
I did take the Armored shell. And two guards.

It worked out well. I got warp speed for a psychic power so it the Tyrant and Guards ran up behind a screen of gargoyles and proceeded to smash ork trucks and punch boyz in the face pretty well.

The foot nob unit (with boss and painboy) would have been tough had I gotten to it. I may need the Swarmlord for that.

Rerolling 1's isn't bad when you generally hit on 3's.

don't put talons on. put on hive commander instead. no need for a bone sword as monstrous creatures are ap2 anyways.

Yes, but Instant Death is very useful!

Really the Instant Death from a single Bonesword might as well not exist for the amount of times it'll actually work. Too much stuff is Ld10/Eternal Warrior for it to make a difference.

Not to mention the Tyrant can just Smash to insta-kill most things worth insta-killing.

The LW/BS is far more useful for the Lash Whip half, lets you charge into terrain more readily and make a mess of things faster than you.

Yeah, there's not much of a point to BS on a Tyrant but LW is worth it.

The thing about the BS / LW combination is not that the Boneswords are that great (just having a chance is handy though!), but making your opponent strike at I1 even when you assault through terrain is extremely useful.

If you want a platform that swoops around the board firing away 12 shots per turn, go double T/L Devourers on the Hive Tyrant.

If you want something that has some firing capabilities, but also engages the enemies tough units in combat, I would go Old Adversary, T/L Devourers and LW/BS on the flyrant. back this baby up with either Gargoyles, Raveners and Shrikes and you have quite a deadly flying assault force.
