so I'm new to 40k (i just played my first game last weekend and feel in love). i haven't bought anything but i have been researching all weekend and i love the way nids look.
with that said i see a lot of doom and gloom about 6th edition nerfing nids and I've seen how long it takes GW to fix stuff (based on research of course).
so my questions are if i want to be competitive in my local tournys are nids an ok choice? and if i go with nids what should i start with? I'm thinking i should definitely get the battleforce but I'm at a loss after that.
also how do you guys plan to deal with shooty armies? nids seems to be in a worse place since there was an overall buff to shooty armies.

Hi and Welcome to the Tyranid hive, Revx. I have only had 4, 6th edition games really, but so far, I think we've improved. we've become the the master Psyker army, our Monstrous creatures now have a much easier time claiming a cover save for not to mention that the Vehicle Meta might change now... Which will obviously benefit us... And the best thing in my opinion... We are now able to tarpit enemy units more reliably, thanks to the change in Fearless. Again, I haven't played that much 6th edition, but I believe that we became slightly more competitive than we were in 5th edition. The Battleforce use to be a good buy. The warriors can be converted to Hive guards or one of them, a Tyranid prime. If you love Tyranids and want to play Competitive, give it a chance. We are still not a Straight forward army to play and we do require a lot more thinking that most Marine armies. Of course, if you just want to win easily, Tyranids are not the army you should choose.

If you want to play to Win, then no, Tyranids are not for you. Sadly, Tyranids is one of those armies that takes a while to LEARN how to play. I suck at 40K, so I have almost lost all my few games I have played. Also we don't know what Your Local Tourney Scene is, so we really can't help you there. Also are you a shooty player, assaulty player? How about hordes or just a small army? Maybe a combination of them all? We need more info on your part. Want an easy army then it's Space Wolves, Imperial Guard, Grey Knights or Blood Angles. Mybe Dark Eldar, but from what I read, they got a nerf and is like Tyranids you need to learn how to play that army. Space Marine armies are more forgiving when you make a mistake. Not so with DE. For Tyranids, it's a SYNERGETIC army, meaning that EVERYTHING has to combine to work as a whole. Hence why it takes a while to learn how to play with. Alot of people gave up on Tyranids with 5th editon. They just couldn't "win" in Tournies with Nids. Then again a few people say they mop up with 5th editon Nids. So it's hard to believe what your read on the net. Also we can't say what 6th edition will be for Nids in the Tourney scene. That will go for ALL armies since no 6th edtion Tournies are held yet. EVERYONE has to learn and adapt for 6th right now so it's a wait and see to see how anyone espically for us Tyranids will do in the Tourney scene. All I can say for me, while I loose every game because I suck, I also have fun. I love the minis. I love the fluff. I love how they look and can be played multiple different ways. Do I want many minis, I can play horde. If I want a few minis, I can play MC. I can be shooty, or assaulty. Yeah we are the Jack of all Trades, master of none. So the quesiton you need to ask your self, is Do you need to win with plastic toy soldiers? Not trying to be mean, but just making you look at it from a different view. These are after all Plastic toy soldiers. VERY EXPENSIVE plastic toy soldiers but toy soldiers non the less. Also if you read the forums, alot of people are winning with Tyranids right now. Then again, everyone has to learn to adapt to the new ruleset. So that can change. So yes you can win with Tyranids. But all you want to do is just win, then Tyranids will bore you eventually. Yes it's nice to win, but I find it better to Game and have fun. Alot of people disagree with me here, so I can't speak for them but only for myself. Starting with the Battleforce box set is a GREAT place to start. Maybe 2 if you can afford it. Also the codex will help as well. Also remember if there is a buff to shooty armies, it's a buff as well for Tyranids. Don't forget our Gaunts can have devorers. 3 shots a turn? If anything Close Combt got a slight nerf, right now, Genestlealers are at least, to me, not a viable option right now. So shooting wise, Tyranids got a major buff, just like everyone else. Oh yeah, sorry I forgot, Welcome to the Tyranid forums.

i want to win; yes, but it doesn't have to be easy. i love complex character building in video games and i've always loved strat games. i'm not worried about the learning curve.
with that said i just love the way nids look and i do like the zergy (not starcraft zergy; horde zergy =P ) feel (i like CC more than shooty but i'm not opposed to either). i actually would like a more well rounded unit. i can say that i would also love to just over run the enemy with a zerg from time to time too. i just dont wont to feel like GW red headed step child, which i read the Tau are =(

Ah yes... Tau... Those poor fellows. Hopefully they'll get a new codex soon. And how we deal with shooting armies? Have disruption. Something vanguard your opponent will focus on as the rest of your army moves closer. That's pretty much the deal. Of course that is way easier said than done.

Hi Revx, welcome to the Hive. Fair warning, I'm one of those "wall of text" guys you get on every forum.
I don't know your gaming history, but I've been around the block a time or two, and I would love to give you this bit of advice: nobody is ever happy with what they have, and fewer are happy with what they're getting. This has been true with every edition change I've been through in D&D, every new class readjustment in WoW, every new set in Magic, and every new codex since I've started 40k. You can't please everybody. So what happens? Somebody is interested in a game, they do some research, and it's all gloom-and-doom, they've missed the heyday and nothing will ever be good again. Usually, that's a misrepresentation.
6th edition is new, and we're all still learning and adjusting to the rules that we were given. From what's shown, the 'Nids can be a pretty potent force when you get the hang of them. Our units have to help each other to reach their goals, so players with lone-wolf tactics, or those who like to build a single uber-champion, tend to fare poorly. Others have some really impressive tournament records. Illithid and N.I.B. have done well for themselves against all odds, and they can be good sources of advice.
Tau are pretty bad off. Tyranids have had it rough, but we can manage. Tau struggle. However, if Tau are the red-headed stepchild of GW, then Sisters of Battle are the malnourished balding orphan GW leaves chained in the basement.
'Nids have a really awesome look, I find. Some things will take converting, though. The Conversion / Terrain forum are great for ideas and how-to threads when you find yourself wanting one of those units. That's where I spend half my time on this site, m'self.
If you're interested in 'Nids as a force, then go for it! Everything has a day on top and a day on bottom, and we don't know what the next FAQ will bring. Start the army you're drawn to, learn to play them, and see what GW brings next.
TL;DR - Welcome aboard, never mind the complaining.

The only thing Tyranids currently have a problem with is flying vehicles. We have just about nothing we can do against them. The solution is to do our best to ignore them and focus on destroying our opponents' ground forces.
We will probably fold like a deck of old cards against a list with more than one storm raven in it, and it looks like the current meta will be flyers. I can't in good conscience recommend nids for tournament play at this point. I suspect we will be 4 or codexes down the chain but if we are lucky we will get some anti-air consideration in White Dwarf between now and then.

New Orleans? Neat, that's not far off. I've never been to Go4Games but I'll have to check it out. I usually go to +1 in Metarie when my soulgrinding job allows me the time. I'm in Thibodaux, so an hour drive is my usual for anything worthwhile.
Start with a codex and two battleforces if you can swing it. That'll give you a ton of troops to start with, and you can make a Prime for an HQ with some spare bits. From there it depends if you're wanting to do swarms, nidzilla, shooty bugs or a mashup for styles. A tervigon would be a good early investment, too. They're a great unit that can be an HQ or a troop depending on needs, and in small games they're all but indispensable. Hard to kill, hard to defend from, psychic, and they spawn a swarm to flood the opponents with. From there, find units that work with your goal, and pick them up as you go.

Glad you decided to go with Nids. To start off, get the codex. After that, get the battleforce boxset. As I said, get 2 of them if you can, or get another one later.
You will still not have a HQ unit so not sure what you want with that. You can convert a Warrior into a Tyranid Prime. If not, a Tevrigon can be a HQ. I use him as a troop choice, so that still doesn't give yoiu an HQ. I guess you can also get a HT/SL kit as well.

Get a trygon! they're good and fun to paint. Tervigons are cool too but they need a lot of extra gaunts to be able to use. i'll tell you what i tell all new nid players. save your warriors and convert them to hive guard. welcome to the swarm.

I loved putting my Trygon togther. Just wished I could have done a better painting job with it.
I forgot to mention Gargoyles. They are lovely minis, and I want to get another box or 2 of them so I have a total of 30. I do plan to field 90 of them eventually.

well i made the jump today, got me a 6th ed rule book, codex, and battleforce. i only got one battleforce because i figured that would keep me busy for a little while and my friend has some nids in his shop that i can use for now.
i did play a 500 point game today aginst space marines, we just did no HQs just to get use to the 6th ed rules. i ran 2 groups of 3 warriors for synapse, 1 group 6 genestealers+Broodlord, and 1 group of hormaguants and i was pretty easily able to wipe him off the table. so it wasnt bade for a spur of the moment first time building an army and playing with it.
ziyousansz i highly recommend you try go4games next time your in town, they have 5 4'x10' tables to play with a tons of terrian that you can place however you want to make your own custom game or table. today they had about 25 people at one point playing mini wargames (40k and hordes/warmachine mostly) and painting and building. i think you would love the friendly atmosphere there.

The only thing Tyranids currently have a problem with is flying vehicles. We have just about nothing we can do against them. The solution is to do our best to ignore them and focus on destroying our opponents' ground forces. Just get an aegis defense line and mod up a quad-gun or Icarus. (if you missed the thread, turns out we CAN manually fire Gun Emplacements. Just not Emplaced Weapons. And to Revx, welcome to the Nid nation. I'm in Memphis, TN. The factory and Battle Bunker are up here. We are also holding the Throne of Skulls Tourny as well this year (biggest NA tourny). Oh and get ready to paint guants. Lots and lots and lots of gaunts.
