didnt it used to be a beam with an initiative test? I seem to remember damn SW wizards in tanks gibbing my Tervigons in 5th with that spell. I don't know how it currently works, but would probably be a good baseline for overload.

focused witchfire power, 18" range, targets a single non-vehicle unit. a model hit by the power takes an initiative test or is removed from play. it's the same idea, but significantly nerfed in that MC's auto pass the test now where it used to be the bane of our existence.

It's always the same.
When you first start playing 40k because there a ton of cool toys, ridiculous over the top lore, and huge imaginary landscapes.
It ends when you're pouring over 400+ pages of rules and arguing about the finer points of copy-pasted paragraphs that would make a lawyer roll his eyes.
It goes from "pew-pew" to "but on page..."

ok. yeah that's the thing they used to spam librarians in rhinos on me with. i think i was thinking of the melta beam or something. i used to get double teamed by SWs and BAs in 5th a lot. My "ally" was usually a chaos dude that used terminators on foot to chase down land speeders, so i counted it as 2v1 with a neutral 4th.

Wow, the rate of new threads popping up is staggering! I don't think there has been this much excitement on the Hive for a long, long time.

yup. jaws would also be an auto hit, because you still have to pass an I test. used to be a beam.... which was auto hit.... and straight to I test. just now the focused part of the witchfire allows it to go astray through cast mechanics and delete the wrong guy.
in fact.... the text for jaws states "...hit by..." directly implies that it is an auto hit... (paraphrase)- if a psychic test is passed and nothing is denied, then the power is manifest, refer to the power text -
jaws text (paraphrase)- target hit by jaws takes I test... blah blah....
every focused witchfires rules make more sense through this interpretation

no? its' a focused witchfire, which follows the rules for witchfires, which requires you to roll to hit according to the rules.

Well I guess Focused Witchfire= Witchfire just like how Gargantuan Creatures=Monstrous Creatures. So we roll for the Maleceptors power and our GC can be dropped. The key there is that the rule clearly states that GC's ARE MC's. Not "...just like a...", or "...counts as...for the purposes of..." It's very specific about what the unit is. My only point to the contrary would be that the creatures don't say "Monstrous Creature" in their Unit Type descriptor on the profile. Tyrannocyte may check for Unit Type, not definition via replacement effect.

There are RAW arguments on both sides of this discussion. It needs an FAQ. Without an FAQ, this thread will just be a series of circular arguments. Local players/tourneys will need to decide how the rule will be interpretted in their games. So to help with that discussion, let's look at some numbers: Assuming you need to roll to hit, below are the odds you'd successfully land a focused witchfire: warp dice, | perils %, | L9 enemy, | L8 enemy | 3 | 7% | 4% | 5% | 4 | 13% | 10% | 12% | 5 | 20% | 16% | 19% |
Personally, I don't think GW would put out a brand new psyker model that has a greater chance of periling itself with its core focused witch fire power than it does focusing a wound on the enemy.
