Personally i think its much more useful than what we got....

This, amongst quite a few other things makes it all the more evident how harebrained our codex is. Lots of cool stuff in this new book. And yes, glorious Warlord Traits.

Sick good, like psychic powers that can't be countered, but better (no Perils either).

Pisses me off, how we were treated. This is on the level that our army wide special rules/unique psychic power chart/'Bio-artifacts' should have been.

I'm not going to say our codex doesn't have it's shortcomings, but we do have access to our awesome FMCs. That being said, if the rumors of a nerf to vector strike are true, that would be evidence that somebody truly does hate us.

There's nothing here that makes me think, "Damn, if only I had gotten something else!" Old Grudges can be a bit of a dud if your warlord isn't kitted out properly or has a particularly small unit but, even so, when the worst Warlord Trait you can get is Preferred Enemy things are looking pretty good.

Imperial Guard does make Codex: Tyranids look a bit sloppy by comparison.

I'd actually put Relentless as the one most likely to be useless, but I often run my CCS full of nothing but Melta. With other Warlords, that one can be amazing.

Really? I am not arguing, as I am not intimately familiar with AM, but they don't seem all that great. (OTOH, most warlord traits are pretty meh...)


I could see how some would be *awesome*.... *if* you could rely on getting them...


1. Outflank: Since you can't rely on this, what units would you have in your army that you would want to outflank? In my mind, it just brings the targets closer to me...

2. Preferred enemy: Best against Nids (since only 1 codex), but still... I don't recall running into many AM warlords that were part of an overly dangerous unit. Is this not usually the case? ( I guess yarrick or Ld Commissar with a blob...??)

3. 12" morale: This is pretty helpful. But anything important (blob) is going to have stubborn or ATSKNF....or be a vehicle.

4. Relentless: How many heavy weapons are in a Command squad? I guess you could attach an IC to a Heavy weapon team... but not sure why relentless would help them much.

5/6: These seem pretty cool. Maybe really cool depending on the orders.

Preferred Enemy in a squadron of Leman Russes (Tank Commander and unit) could be pretty nasty, I imagine.

I don't see which trait is detrimental to our army...

Removing a cover save is ok vs turtling opponents and not much else.

Gaining Feel no pain after taking a wound is great. Unless you somehow get blasted from full to 0 in one turn. then you did something wrong.

Synaptic Lynchpin allows us a bigger bubble of movement. We can't underestimate synapse in our new codex

2 VP for each challenge won by your warlord would be nice if we had better duelists than we do. very situational, and can't really build a strategy around it without putting your warlord in severe danger. Risky, but could turn a game for you.

Nightvision is nice if you play with night fighting.. again situational, but can hardly be planned (lucky if you even start the game with nightfighting in play)

and turning a forest within 12" into a carnivorous jungle... seriously??? how does this fit fluff-wise or power-wise??? Not only is it impossible to make any major... or even minor plays with this, it essentially does nothing. I don't know what they were thinking when they made this... its only use is if you put an objective in that forest... since units with "move through cover" can't be hurt by dangerous terrain.

Do I have my info wrong?

1) Outflank is great for a number of units already worth taking on their own merit. PCS with flamers, a number of Leman Russ variants, blob squads with Priests or Inquisitors, etc. Using it with Vendettas could be particularly devastating.

2) Preferred Enemy is a tad hit and miss. On one hand it can make a kitted out Command Squad that little bit better at its job, on the other hand it could be wasted on five guys with Las weapons. On an IC it can become vicious though. Particularly with the new Precision Shot order on a blob squad if you really need a particular model dead.

3) 12" morale control pretty much speaks for itself in a mid leadership army that relies on having Commanders close by other units.

4) Relentless is like PE again. Pretty tame on some units, absolutely ridiculous with others. Blob is looking pretty strong right now and giving a 50 man blob squad with 5 heavy weapons and 5 special weapons the ability to move, shoot and assault on the same turn is insane. That's potentially 5 Lascannon shots, 5 Plasmagun shots, 105 Lasgun shots, 5 Laspistol shots and 110 attacks on the charge with FRF, SRF. Admitted, that scenario is an extreme, casualty free one that's unlikely to ever happen but it gives you an idea of how devastating a setup like that could be even to an army like Tyranids. Although, as West noted, this is also the only trait that can be completely useless on a unit with assault weapons.

5/6) Orders are amazing in this codex. Anything that allows you to make more of them is a massive boon to any IG force. Giving IC's orders makes them a lot more versatile. (Imagine getting Mastery Level 1 and then access to 6 psychic powers that can't be negated or suffer Perils for as a Warlord Trait.) The 18" one allows you more flexibility in how you deploy your army but the +1 Order is the real ticket. People will run PCS squads bare bones just to have an Order caddy on the field. This takes away the 30pt tax and allows you another choice of 9 orders on a pre-made unit.

They're nothing to build an army around but the point is that you don't need to. In almost any case you can find a solid use for these traits and, in some cases, they can actually have amazing synergy with units you're already likely to have on the battlefield. It's one of the few times I've actually seen Warlord Traits as something other than an afterthought. (The only other being Inquisition.)
