You also play Pokemon? Little by little I'm becoming a fan of yours At times I'm not crazy about nids I'm crazy about the other little monsters, so fierce that I just finished a fanfiction with over a million words last year. So you can be sure I'll come by from time to time and see what you've painted, even if its just Hormagaunts and Genestealers (which are cool models alike). And nids can use an aegis line as well (but sadly not the weapon emplacements), so thats no problem with me either^^ I've seen it on the table just grey or black until I came here, so yours are really refreshing! I used to be a bigger fan when I was 9-12. I knew all the pokemon by name and I watched all the episodes of the show. But then I got older and had less time, and they became "kiddie games". Now I'm an extremely casual pokemon gamer, I keep restarting Diamond because it tends to be a year or more before I pick it up again. I'm happy to hear that you'll check in! I'm also glad to hear you like how my Aegis Line is shaping up! But now I have some sad news to announce. Due to reasons I don't yet know, for my Humanities class, we now have double the readings, bringing us to about 100-200 pages a week, all of which are hard reads like ancient scriptures or critical essays written for philosophers, by philosophers... I'm not even managing to get them done on time (no one is) so needless to say, almost every moment of freetime I have will now be relegated to trying to unravel these long, endless readings, on top of my Colour Theory readings... ugh. Eitherway, this means I may not be on the hive for a week, or two, or maybe a month... we'll see how well things go.

Pokemon is rather awesome. I go back and play through the old games every year or so as well - and then trade all the goods one to my preferred game of the new generation, which is Black at the moment. Not sure I want Black/White 2, though.
I do like your scheme. The colour combination is excellent, though I'm biased because I'm a big fan of Ultramarines as well. I might have mentioned this in one of your older threads, since I remember thinking about it a while ago, but I think the orange lichen that you use on the base is what makes the scheme effective. That Pyrovore was a little underwhelming until you got the base done, then it was awesome. I don't know if that has anything to do with me associating your scheme with a coral reef and thus expecting there to be some... coral, or if it's just a need for there to be another non-metallic colour in there. Have you had any similar thoughts on that?

Oh my, it's been MONTHS! College got crazy with everything from having to somehow ready 400 pages a week on top of a bazillion other projects, and there was a lot of group drama in a presentation, and there was some serious family and friend issues too. Thankfully, things are a bit calmer now, but I suspect I'll have a busy summer. We'll see how much updating and painting I do. I enjoy painting minis, but drawing and friends and my summer job have all get to come first! So since my last post, I think I've had time to paint only 3 times, two of those times were only for 30 minutes, but tonight I think I put about an hour and a half in total. I'm not quite done schoolwork, but all the homework I have left HAS to be done in the studios since I don't have the equipment at home. I don't have much for you guys, but here's what I've got: This is the last half of my Aegis line, now finished! I'll be giving it a Krylon spray when I get up tomorrow. I'm hoping the spray will make the colours more vibrant like it did for the last half. If I have time, I'll take pictures of the whole line together. Now that the Aegis line is done, I'm back to nids! Sadly, it's not very exciting, I'm only working on 4 Hormagaunts: These girls were based in Hawk Turquoise with an Asurman wash (it was still a bit wet when I took this picture). I'm almost out of Turquoise, in fact, I'm almost out of a lot of paints I use, so I'm not sure if I'll even be able to finish these models. I can't visit my local store until after Monday or so... In other news, I know I've probably expressed this before, but I'm feeling ambivalent about 40k. I watched some 40k videos for the first time in months, and it didn't really hook me in. Sadly, the videos talked a lot about imbalance, cheese, stats and combinations of units. I'm sure most people like that stuff, but for me it's like trying to watch an epic movie with someone who won't stop ruining it by telling you what's CGI and how they shot that scene and this scene and the affair this actor had and what not. Most people in my area like to talk about that stuff, I don't. Perhaps 40k is just the wrong game for immersion... Anyways, it's great to come back to the Hive! Lets see how long I manage to stick around for!

What YOU need, good sir, is to swarm Captain Sicarius with 60 Hormagaunts! That'll perk any Hive Mind right up!

Welcome back! The Aegis line turned out great. I understand what you mean about people talking more about rules and less about fluff. Just looking at the codices - my 2nd ed codices had multiple short stories, some of which tied together in a longer narrative. The 3rd edition, being thinner, had less of this, and it seemed to taper off as the edition continued. The first Dark Eldar codex still had a fair number of stories while the Tyranid codex, several years later, hardly had any. The fluff portions of the codex seem to have become more Macro, wider scale, talking about a race or army as a whole entity and maybe summarizing some of its history and special characters. It seems like the creative writing, the close-in looks have been pushed aside, which could explain the lack of discussion about anything besides the rules.
Sounds like you have plenty of reading as it is, but maybe during the summer look into some of the Black Library collections. I've heard great things about the Horus Heresy sequence, and I loved the one book I've read from it. I also like most of the books I've read, though every once in a while I'll come across a stinker - Lee Lightner destroyed the Ragnar series - I read the four Will King novels in a matter of days, then came to a screeching halt on the 5th installment and haven't been able to pick it back up.

Hey, Xan! Glad to see you again! A fully painted Aegis is a nice thing to put on the table and Hormagaunts are very nice models to paint! So if you'll find some time for 40k the next days I'm sure you won't regret it VTAeries has a good point there! I've read 9 books of the Horus Heresy by now and and apart of #8 they all were great, especially if you like Speez Mahreens. They allways keep me in mood for 40k for sure

What YOU need, good sir, is to swarm Captain Sicarius with 60 Hormagaunts! That'll perk any Hive Mind right up! I'm about 48 painted Hormies away from that Plus I only have 32 models, but one day I'd like to swarm someone with Hormies, they're my favorite looking troop choice. FTGTEvan - Yeah, there's not much discussion to be had a bout fluff now a days. What's there to say "hey, the Swarmlord can die over and over again" "uhm... yeah... everyone whose read the codex knows that," The only fluff talk tends to involve hating on Matt Ward or remembering the good ol' days of 2nd ed, which I wasn't around for. In that regard, DnD type RPG's are more fun. After some sort of RPG people aren't talking about stats, models or cheese, they're talking about how epic it was when Dovahkiin Fus Ro Dah'd the strongest man alive up to the roof of a school so he could bring down the roof on top of the hundreds of zombies so the whole party could escape. (That was one of the most epic rp's I've ever been a part of). I think in 40k, it's really hard to have that fluffy-sort of dialogue. It's a combination of the thin fluff, the mass amount of models, the imbalanced game that attracts exploiters ad power gamers, and a NEED to win and keep up with other gamers because of the huge investment of time and money that goes into an army. I've actually read the first Horus Heresy book. I have to say, Dan Abnett is now one of my favorite authors. Sadly, the guy who wrote the next book hasn't lived up to that legacy. I almost quit the 2nd book as the author wasted everyone's time focused on 2 characters no one gave a hoot about. I thought I had slipped into some amateur fanfic... because that's how most of those start out. "Oh look, here's my pretty OC woman, she's super pretty, she did these things, oh look she's looking in a mirror, allow to take 10 pages describing her beauty". Haha, but now I'm ranting . Thankfully whatever his name is has gotten to the action, but we'll see if he can keep with it, or if this whole book is going to tease action and never deliver. Thing is, 40k reading is a lot different from actual 40k. While reading the books does get me interested in gaming, it doesn't really make we want to play 40k, it makes me want to play some sort of warband rpg, where you have maybe 20 figures or less, all with personalities and the encounters and battles are more intricate than charging to the enemy on a flat field. But I think I'm just disenchanted with the realization of how much money it'd take to buy a decent army, which will become obsolete in the competitive club scene the moment something is updated, which means hundreds of dollars lost, and it means you'll always have a grey tide until you paint fast or paint good but do it all day... or if you have an elite army. And then there's also the issues I have with Space Marines... sometimes I like them, sometimes I hate them. I roll my eyes everytime the books hit a point where mere mortals are falling to their feet and crying at the sight of some huge guy who's somehow supposed to be a warrior and a bishiboy rolled into one. I get what they're trying to do, but I have never met a mary sue I liked. I like my marines flawed, and with all the art of them being scar faced and ugly, I just can't buy any bit of writing that calls them beautiful. I guess you could also say that, since I'm a girl and girls can't be Space Marines (and in RL this stuff gets some local gamers really really really annoyed if you say you have female marines), I don't get to experience any self-insertion you boys might get when you read about the Marines. If anything, you could say that sometimes it feels like it's getting rubbed in my face. Although I do think it's funny that GW's poster boys are a boys-only club but everyone wants more girls in the hobby. I had some pictures to post, but I've wasted my time ranting. Oops! I'll try and post them on the go if I get a chance. I'm going out to a pub with my friends tonight to celebrate after we hand in our final essays for Humanities.

You use a Krylon spray to seal stuff? Which is it? I tried Purity seal and made my mini look a bit frosty So Im lookin for an alternative.

You use a Krylon spray to seal stuff? Which is it? I tried Purity seal and made my mini look a bit frosty So Im lookin for an alternative. I use Krylon Matte Finish. The name is a bit of a lie though, it has a bit of a sheen to it, but that also intensifies the colours I find. This spray is great for Marines and Nids (if you want a bit of a sheen to the chitin) but it makes Orks and flesh heavy models look like... well... models. I'm looking into finding and trying Testors Dullcote on my orks, but I haven't had time to go out to the hobby store that sells it. Alright, I'm back from the bar, I had an okay time. Things were great until we were all ready to go and my friend's other friend showed up, then we were stuck there for another hour talking, only I wasn't part of any of the conversations, so I left feeling sort of annoyed. But it was a beautiful warm evening and it's hard to be mad when you have a whole evening off to do ANYTHING before school tomorrow! So here's the pictures! Here's the other half of the Aegis line, sprayed. As I was saying, 60mm, there's a sheen to these bits now from the last photos I sent. And here's the whole line together, like Marines, they're half and half. I probably should have put my Marines in the line, but I had to take these pic's quick and m Hormies were the closest thing around. and here's a pic more centered on the gaunts. I gave them another layer of Hawk Turquoise, that's it. Next layer will either be a 50/50 mix or I might go right up to the next paint. But for now, I'm still a bit too dull minded to be painting Minis, so I'm going to go do something else for the night. Technically the school closes tomorrow, but next week Friday I have my final crit. So i need to find out when the studios close, if it's going to be closed after this Monday, than you guys might not here from me for a bit, because I have a lot of work I need to do! Cheers!

Thanks for the info Xan! Is it me, the exposure or did it darken it a bit? Colors do look better though, opposite of purity seals flattened look.

I just read through this whole log for the first time. All your models looks really good! I have no comment on the orks because personally I hate GW's version of them. I always pictured orcs like in LOTR, and GW's are cartoony and comical looking. meh. You did mention a pale skin tone with just a hint of green though, what I did with some of my Nurgle stuff, you could paint them grey, and highlight and with lighter grey like you normally would, then give a watered down wash of biel tan green, it's worth a try, I could link you to a pic of what it looks like if you wanted. Also, off topic, but you''re doing graphic design? I just graduated from the 3 year course, I know what you mean by people seeing what you've done and not knowing how much work has gone it to it lol. How are you liking it? Oh and if you aren't so interested in playing 40k, why don't you just play fantasy? Or both lol Ps, paint up those hormies, I love them, pretty much my favourite models, I just want hundreds of them

@xan you do know there's a WH40K rpg, right? the system's pretty decent. they have several systems with varying power levels, from guardsman to inquisitor's acolyte to deathwatch killteams (and if you like the bad guys, they have a whole system for playing devotees of chaos from cultist to CSM). my friends here keep trying to get me to run it but we have enough trouble getting together for regular 40k games as it is. it's pretty widely available from what i've seen, or you can direct order. linky: www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_minisite.asp?eidm=50good 40k fiction, check out gaunt's ghosts and the eisenhorn/ravenor series (abnett) and the night lords trilogy (adb). night lords and eisenhorn stand alone as excellent fiction by any standard, and blow away the vast majority of other 40k stuff. the HH books are a labour of love; you suffer the (please do not swear) ones to get to the excellent ones. worth the trip though. nice looking models, btw ~

Hello Hive, it's been a long time since I was active in this blog. A lot of things have happened in my life both good and bad. Summer was rather harsh, my home almost got flooded, most of the province did. I got my first job, which I'm still working while I'm in school. Worst of all though, my great gran took ill shortly after the flooding was done, and for the rest of summer, and up until November 1st, my family and I were visiting her in the town over as often as possible. November 1st she passed on… it's been hard for me. Needless to say, I've been quite busy with more important matters to find time to paint and post. To be honest, you might not see much of me once I've caught up on showing you guys what I have had time to work on and finish. I still don't have much time to paint. Anyways, lets get to it. Here's some pictures of all the Tyranid models I've painted since my last post: It's not much compared to most people, but it's something, right? How about a big group shot of my entire army now? It's still pretty tiny, and it still lacks big hitters, but it's coming along. I've got 2 more Hive guard, a Zoey and 10 Gargoyles primed and ready for painting, and a Plastic Tyrant sitting her box awaiting magnets and time to work on her. I also broke down and bought two packs of Warrior Bonesword and Lashwhips from my LGS. So I've got plenty to work on. If you guys would like to see some close ups of the Biovore or Hive guard, let me know and I'll try and find time to upload them. I've got some other stuff to show, including my rebased Ork army refinished with Testors dullcoat, and some non-40k minis of interest. But until I can find some time, that's it for now Hive! Good night.
