I find your scheme really interesting, seeing all the ''abstract'' colouring and such! My very first Tyranids were Gold-skinned, with platinum armour plates, but apparently everybody thought I was crazy, or that it didn't look too good... I ended up quitting the scheme, and sold my army. Now Im back in the hobby again, but I have a different colour scheme. I really like it to see someone who also experiments with ''abstract'' colours as well!
My own personal liking would go to maybe a tad darker blue, to have a little more contrast with the gold, which will also make the gold ''jump out'' more I think. Also, this is just my personal preference, but I would also look for a ''third'' colour to pick out small claws/nails, teeth, or other ''spiky'' details, rather than making them all gold. In this way your model's details are better accentuated (<- sorry, my main language isn't English, so I dont know if this is a correct word?), while not taking away from the induvidual colours at all. Of course, these are just tips/suggestions, so do with these as you like!
On a side note, I think your Orcs look pretty awesome too! I think the picture with the more ''brownish'' Orc is rather interesting, and I would love to see an army of different skin-toned Orcs! Do you just have that single mini painted that way (maybe squad leader or something?), or do you have various units in that manner?
Keep up the good work!!
EDIT: Obviously I claim page 2 of this thread in the name of Hive Fleet Draezymous, muwhahaha

Even though the pyrovore may not shine in terms of game play...they are one of the coolest looking models in our army...and i cant wait to see yours completed!

Wow, are this really the first models you ever painted (Orks and Nids)? I wish I could do it that good, I am one of those guys who already bought the whole tyranid collection (and a whole Space Marine, Dark Eldar and Lizardmen-army) and have the greatest part still white based yet. One of the reasons I play nidzilla is that I like to paint the monstrous creatures much more than all the tiny gaunts. A friend of me tried a dark metallic scheme before I started the hobby and also everyone said that is un-niddy, I liked the idea at that time and still does so. It looked like Giger's Alien and I just love this beast! Why should it be impossible for the hive to put some iron or gold in their warped carapaces? I am sure they consume even that materials on some worlds to create something new.
As for the objective markers: I would leave them this way. They already have a good size for markers (apparently its not that a difference to 40mm bases, I used them for my ripper swarms). The objectice markers GW came out with some time ago are much smaller, but everyone I know agrees that a bigger size is better, or else you could sometimes forget where you placed them before the game.

We all need some me time now and again, the pyrovore looks great so far, and makes me excited to see your scheme on even larger bugs. Keep up the good work. I'm just as excited as you! Aside from my Pyrovore, the biggest model I currently have is a Hive Tyrant. She's currently still sitting mint and untouched in her box. I'm going to be magnetizing her, but I may also wait and buy a second torso so I can get two Tyrants out of her. Sadly those torsos sure cost a lot... I find your scheme really interesting, seeing all the ''abstract'' colouring and such! My very first Tyranids were Gold-skinned, with platinum armour plates, but apparently everybody thought I was crazy, or that it didn't look too good... EDIT: Obviously I claim page 2 of this thread in the name of Hive Fleet Draezymous, muwhahaha I heard that a lot when I was telling people about my idea to have gold on my nids. People were ambivalent at best. Most people told me it couldn't be done without making the models un-niddy. Now a days I got A LOT of comments and compliments on my models. Recently I was halfway across the store watching a game, when someone stood up and loudly asked "who's nids are these?" I said they were mine and the guy complimented me. Another time before that, a new employee at my LGW dropped what he was doing to come and look at my nids as I was taking them out to paint. I've never seen someone so awestruck over minis before. It was quite flattering, considering I'm only a decent level painter in the world of painting. Needless to say, people in the area now kind of know me as the girl who proved that gold/metallic nids can look niddy and awesome. I'm actually quite happy with how my nids look. It took a long time to find the right shades of blue/blue-green to make my minis look so bright. A lot of people have asked me what paints I use for the skin. But thanks for the suggestions all the same. As for my orks, the whole army (tiny as it is right now) all have varied skin tones. I've got dark green orks, bright green orks, military green orks, brown-washed green orks, and several shades of yellowy orks too. I love the idea of an ork army with varying skin tones, it just seem so... orky! Sadly it makes it hard to design a colour scheme around them, because while red compliments green, it's more analogous with yellow. Plus, while dark green and bright red are nice, bright green and bright red aren't so great. If I used purple, the yellow orks would look great, but the green ones would just remind everyone of the hulk. This is the main thing I'm struggling with right now. And I've thought about unifying the skin of my orks just so I can make them all match the other colours of their "uniform" better. But I really like the mixed skin look. Even though the pyrovore may not shine in terms of game play...they are one of the coolest looking models in our army...and i cant wait to see yours completed! Thanks! Hopefully it'll be soon! The objectice markers GW came out with some time ago are much smaller, but everyone I know agrees that a bigger size is better, or else you could sometimes forget where you placed them before the game. No, they aren't actually. Before them I had painted some Vespids some years back. That was when I only had about 3-4 paint pots and I didn't even really know what 40k was. Here's a picture of them: ABout 3 years later, I found a GW in my city and went there with the intent of getting into the hobby. I walked out with AoBR. The first models I painted seriously were my Space Marines. Here's some pictures of them: As you can probably tell, I have a thing for blue, gold and black. Those are the colours I've always used to define myself. So in a way, my Vespids and marines have been practice for my nids. I realize that even with that many Vespids, SM, and Orks under my belt, some people might still be envious of my painting ability. But I can assure you, it's not something I was just born gifted in. Before I started painting I was, and still am, an artist. I may not be a painter, but art has helped me develop an eye for things, and a steady hand. And now I'm taking a colour theory course in college, so that should help me with colour schemes and painting as well. I feel the same way about Tyranids. Why can't they have some metal-mixed with flesh? Part of the Pyrovore's job is to metal down minerals and metals for the hive's biomatter. I may yet still glue them onto 40mm bases, but I think for now, I'll leave them as is. Without a base, when placed on a surface, it looks like the objective is growing from the thing it's on, you lose that effect with a base. But if they start getting chipped at the edges or something, I'll base them. Thanks for the input.

Oh wow, those Orks look great! Especially with the different skin tones! ;D I don't think the different colours make much of a problem for the colour of the armour. They all look like they suit it. And the Marines are nice too! I like the half and half Dreadnought! And I put my Genestealer Marker thingies on bases and they look pretty good. It just unifies them and makes them look the same as the rest of the army - but it's up to you. Gold is definitely your thing, Xan!

It just unifies them and makes them look the same as the rest of the army - but it's up to you. Gold is definitely your thing, Xan! Thanks! I'm starting to think so too! I just really like using gold, there's so many ways to paint it... I've got about 3-5 different methods I've tried... Many more I may yet try. Anyways... Because life has been kind of cruddy of late, I find myself once again brooding over my orks. When I'm frustrated or upset about things outside my power, I tend to redirect my energy into worrying about things that have been bothering me for a long time... Now I'm thinking about maybe creating a multi-klan ork army. The mixed skin colour with a mixed clan look might nail home the rag-tag nature orks embody. I could maybe use bronze, or gold, or some symbol or design to unit them all, as well as some sort of unique basing... But I don't know, I've always been a stickler against using GW colour schemes. But it seems that mixed ork armies are far rarer than I thought, and it'd definitely be fun to paint, what with all the variety. What do you guys think? I don't have the luxury of going out to the clubs looking for ork players and what they field painted, so I'm relying on you guys here.... Do you see a lot of mixed ork armies? Is one clan more popular than the others? Moving on a bit... Here's a list of models that I have painted. I'm not going to give weapon options unless they're glued on: 1 Tyranid Prime 12 Termagants 12 Hormagaunts 10 Ripper Swarms 20 Termagaunts with devourers (love these girls!!!) 5 Warriors It's not a lot. But I'm proud of my army all the same . Now here's a list of whats lined up to be painted and assembled: 1 pyrovore (working on) 20 Hormagaunts (primes) 16 Genestealers with scything talons (primed) 1 Biovore (assembled) 3 Spore Mines (assembled) 1 Zoanthrope (assembled) 3 Hive Guard (primed) 10 Gargoyles (partially assembled) 1 Tyrant (still in box) I'm curious as to how viable an army made from these models would be. If you guys get bored and want to make a list, or give some simple tactical advice, go for it. I'm still at the novice stage of wargaming, where my tactics mainly consist of shooting with what has guns, and charging with what has CC weapons . I got a another layer of bronze done on my pyrovore tonight, but I didn't take a picture because the difference is minuscule to the untrained eye. I'll probably be at school for 13 hours everyday until Monday, so there probably won't be much of any work done on my pyro until Monday or Wednesday, depending on how my homework goes...

Back then, there were deathskull models, goff models, bad moon models, speed freeks, etc. Each one was usually painted in their clan style, so the paintscheme was all over the place. I think if you found a happy medium with a theme that unifies the units a bit despite different uniforms, it wouldn't be all that off the wall, and actually be a bit old-school.

Making a list out of these models? I'm glad to serve! Writing lists is my passion. You could try this 1000 pts-List to get used to some tactical aspects we have now, especially the Flyrant (with Biomancy) and Look out Sir-wound allocation with the Prime: *************** 2 HQ *************** Hive Tyrant, 2x Twin-linked Devourers, Hive Commander, Wings, Leech Essence, Paroxysm - - - > 285 Pts Tyranid Prime, Lash and Bonesword, Deathspitter - - - > 100 Pts *************** 1 Elite *************** 3 Hive Guard - - - > 150 Pts *************** 3 Troops *************** 10 Termagants with Fleshborers - - - > 50 Pts 3 Tyranid Warriors, Scything Talons, Deathspitter, 1 x Barbled Strangler - - - > 110 Pts 20 Termagants with Devourers - - - > 200 Pts *************** 1 Assault *************** 10 Gargoyles - - - > 60 Pts *************** 1 Heavy Support *************** 1 Biovore - - - > 45 Pts total points Tyranids : 999 You're using Hive Commander to let your Devourergaunts outflank your enemy and shoot all their 60 shots into the most expensive unit. The Flyrant swoops in from your side of the table up to 24" into the middle to shoot down enemy fliers or other targets. In smaller games she can be very hard to get down. All your reserves come in on 2+ and are threatening the enemies lines from different sides. That is always a nice strategy to let them split fire and therefore doing less damage on your ladies. The Biovore and Hive Guards keep shooting out of cover, the Warriors are providing backfield synapse and holding objectives. Gargoyles can screen your units and provide cover while moving forward. Or you could buy some seed capsules, coconut shells or whatever in a deco shop and assemble two Spore Pods, so this list would be viable to you: *************** 2 HQ *************** Hive Tyrant, 2x Twin-linked Devourers, Hive Commander, Wings, Leech Essence, Paroxysm - - - > 285 Pts Tyranid Prime, Lash and Bonesword, Deathspitter - - - > 100 Pts *************** 3 Elite *************** 10 Ymgarl-Genestealers (Just take your common genestealers, nobody would mind that) - - - > 230 Pts The Doom of Malan'Tai (use your Zoanthrope, because there is no model available yet) + Mycetic Spore -> 40 Pts - - - > 130 Pts 3 Hive Guard - - - > 150 Pts *************** 3 Troops *************** 20 Devilgaunts + Mycetic Spore -> 40 Pkt. - - - > 240 Pts 10 Termagants with Fleshborers - - - > 50 Pts 4 Tyranid Warriors, Rending Claws, Deathspitter, 1 x Barbled Strangler - - - > 165 Pts *************** 1 Assault *************** 10 Gargoyles - - - > 60 Pts *************** 1 Heavy Support *************** 2 Biovores (one being your Pyrovore) - - - > 90 Pts total points Tyranids : 1500 It's the same strategy as before but very hardcore! You just deploy the Tyranid Prime (important backfield synapse), the Biovores, the Fleshborergaunts, the Hive Guard and the Gargoyles somewhere in cover and assure they survive one or two rounds of shooting. On the second turn everything will come in on 2+: The ymgarl-stealers, the devilgaunts with the pod, the flyrant, the doom and your warriors via outflanking. They will do extremely high damage and with all that danger around your enemy will never know where to defense his line first. This is a really good list even without a tervigon, I suggest. Makes me wanna try it by myself

Wow zoat! I didn't expect list advice so fast, and so detailed! It's greatly appreciated. I'm not good at building lists, because I still don't get all the rules, nor have I played enough games to understand the game all that much. I'll try the lists out when I get a chance, sadly that might be a few months. This is another late night post, and I'm pretty bagged. I think I've had bad sleep for 3 days now, and I'm hoping to reverse some of that tonight, so I won't linger for long. It seems like the harder I work, the more I feel compelled to do something fun, and in this case it's model painting. So even though I wasn't home until 11:30, and I wasn't fed until 11:45, I still found time to paint another layer of my pyrovore. I'm not sure if I'll be able to get the last layer of it done, it all depends on if my paint is any good or not. It seems like I'm running out of all my most used paints all at once. It sucks because I don't have time to go out to the club this week to buy more! Anyways, here's my pyrovore. I hope you guys can see some difference. Sadly, it's the final layer of good that makes it all pop... Anyways, good night hive. I've got another 12-14 hour day at school tomorrow. Hope you guys have a better weekend than me...

No problem if you have to wait some time for your next game, the lists probably won't change a lot to play in the next few month Some rules I would recommend to read again before playing: - Flying monstrous creatures - Biomancy psychic powers - Characters and Look out, Sir! I really like that black-to-gold-levelling on the carapace Makes it look very noble!

I really like that black-to-gold-levelling on the carapace Makes it look very noble! Thanks for the rules recommendations! It's as if you read my mind. I don't have time to read the whole rule book with enough time and speed to remember it all, got too much college reading to do. But if I get a light week I can at least brush up on rules that affect me the most. I decided to stay home to work today, that way I can take some food and walk breaks to keep me going. Last night and this morning I had a bit of time to do more work on my pyrovore. I managed to revitalize my burnished gold paint to finish her up, and I had time to put some sand on her base to dry over night. This morning I added the slime effect to the base, so hopefully by tonight that will be dry, and I may even be able to put down the first layer of blue on the base. The goo effect only took moments, so for the rest of the little time I had, I grabbed half of the aegis line barricade pieces I had and applied a base layer of blue to them. I'm planning to have these match my marines, although I might make them look more dirty and war torn in the end if they turn out too bright and gaudy.

Here's some quick pictures of my progress. My pyrovore is more or less finished, she just needs a spray of varnish and some gloss painted onto the goo mounds after that. Hopefully Wednesday's weather is good for that... But probably not, tomorrow is supposed to have a windchill of -35C! Here's the progress on the one half of the aegis line I'm working on, it might be hard to see in the pictures, but I dry brushed the black. Now I'm laying down some bronze over the big metal bits before I work up the gold. I'm starting to think I spend too much of my spare time on painting. It was great at first, but as an artist, I'm expected to sketch outside of class, and I really think I should be doing more of that. So, sadly, I might be updating this thread less. But regardless, I'm going to keep painting away when I can. But now I don't know what to paint next... I'm not going to touch my orks until after this semester, because I'd hate to start a new scheme and then learn more about colour theory and feel like redoing them again. So that narrows things down to my bids or the few loose models I have, most aren't primed. So guys, scroll up to my list of untainted models and suggest what I should paint next . keep in mind that I'm probably going to be working in micro ba techies of 3-4 troop sized units or 1 40mm base or higher.

Well, it looks like you'll have plenty of options on what to paint next. I'd go with whatever is your favorite model from one of Zoat's lsts; maybe the stealers or hive guard. I'd personally be tempted by the hormagaunts since I think they're cool models. Good luck! And I can completely understand real life getting in the way.

But the "worse" a model is in game terms... The more I want to paint it. Some of it has to do with the fact that a lot of the bad models are my favourite (lictors, warriors, Hormagaunts) but I think it's mostly a strange compulsion to paint my models in order of least to most competitive... So I may end up painting 4 Hormagaunts after I finish up this aegis line, which may or may not take a while. After these blue sections I have the same amount of black sections to paint. I may stagger my models by painting 4 troops and then 1 elite or bigger sized model, we'll see. Either way, I'm surprised that I've gotten as far as I have with my models. I think I'm at, or close to the half way point, I never thought this day would come!
