Doom and the Necron Lord (combat)

So last night my Doom was assaulted by a Necron Lord with Orb. He was the last man who got back up from a nearby CC. He runs in and does a wound and I fail to wound him. We stay in combat because of nearby Synapse. We go into my phase and at the start of the Shooting phase, he fails his leadership and loses his remaining wound. The Necron Lord falls down.

So at this point... I wonder what to do. He said I am no longer locked in CC and I can shoot normally. So I shoot a Strength 8 Cataclysm at a nearby Immortal unit, that got dropped off last round by Night Scythe, and kill 8-9 dudes.

At the end of the phase, the Lord stood back up and on his shooting phase the Doom promptly sucked the life out of him again.

Did that go down right? It was interesting... And kind of funny (if you were there)

This seems so wrong. First of all, if he is last in his unit, I believe (I could be wrong) He DOESN'T get to have a WBB roll. Another part that is wrong is when you shot down the Night Scyther you can't Kill the 8-9 dudes inside because there is a special Necron rule that they get to deploy still in reserve even though the NS was destroyed.

About not being locked in CC and then being able to shoot? Not sure. I think you played that part right. Other parts I am sure were played wrong.

Lords can get back up without the squad, they have a better version of Reanimation Protocals called Ever Living. As long as there is no enemy model within 2 inches (I think it's 2 inches) they can get their EL roll.

I didn't shoot the Night Scythe. Go back and re-read my post. I shot the guys that disembarked from it the turn before. They were grouped up in a nice little circle 18" away from the Doom. He thought he was OK since the Doom was locked in CC with his Lord. The Lord has the Ever-Living Rule which allows him to get up on a 5+.

Curiously enough although Necron units embarked in a Night Scythe do return to reserves if the flier is shot that rule says nothing about them being immune to the effects of being in a crashing flier (ie taking S10 hits) so, as the rules are currently, they both take the hits and return to reserves. Something for an FAQ I suppose.

As to the actual question; you can only be locked in combat if there is a (non-vehicle) enemy model in base contact with at least one of the models in your unit. In this case there are none as the Lord was slain by outside circumstances. The same thing would happen if a Blast template were to scatter onto the Lord and kill him.

So yes, if you find yourself extricated from a combat during your shooting phase then that unit is now allowed to shoot as normal.

You can't shoot him if he gets up at the end of the shooting phase, since the shooting phase is over at that point.

Also - if the Lord had an Ressurection Orb, he'd be standing back up on a 4+.

And anybody with Everliving can stand back up as long as they can do so within 2" of the EL counter you put down when they died. So it is theoretically possible to stop them from getting back up if you've got enough guys around to make sure he can't stand up (can't be within 1" of an enemy model). Its only ever happened to me once, usually you have to get enough Consolidation to do so, and make sure to plan things very very carefully.

Also note - Crypteks have Everliving as well, and since they become part of the squad they join, they can still count as Troops (and deny gaining Kill Points/VPs) even if the rest of that squad has died.

I had a Unit of Genestealers with a Broodlord wipe out a troop unit with a Cryptek & Lord who were trying to capture an objective. They all fell down and I consolidated away onto the objective. At the end, the Cryptek and Lord both got back up. Then on his turn he assaulted me pulling me off the objective and into combat. I knocked them all down again and consolidated back on the objective. (This was turn 4 so I was counting on the game ending soon). We did this 3-4 more assault phases with him finally failing his WBB rolls and me taking the objective.

Yes, that was played correctly. He died in your shooting phase, got back up at the end of the shooting phase. Dooms power goes off again at the beginning of his shooting phase. He should have moved out of range to avoid it in his movement phase. It reads a little convoluted, but when you break it down in sequence, it is accurate.

The debate here would be whether you were counted as being in locked in combat in the shooting phase since Spirit Leech goes off at the beginning of the Shooting phase. Since your opponent said it could happen that way, then you were ok.

3" and 1" away from an enemy. The best way to handle EL is to cover the token with models to deny the 1" rule

Being locked in close combat requires a model in base contact. Kind of like double chargin for over watch.

It depends on when you check for BTB contact. Your already in the shooting phase. Do you check at the beginning or when the model takes an action.

Yes, the thing with the Genestealers happened a while ago in a different game. However, the challenge was do I spread out and try to block the Ever living...or try and retake the objective. I only had about 5 Genestealers with B'lord left in that unit. This all started a the top of 4 and lasted through 6 when the game ended.
