Da greenskins (good amount of pics)

Alright guys, I have been playing greenskins since i started Warhammer, they were my first army.. but just a few months ago, i got better at painting and tried my green boyz over again. only issue, i highlighted them... but just in the wrong colors..

I start with a lovely coat of goblin green over all the orks skin.. after that, i give it a coat of dark green ink... from there i highlight the skin.. you guessed it. goblin green. My issue, is that the 2 colors are on different spectrum's of green, one pretty dark, the other, pretty light. Now, see for yourselfs...

see there both the same models, the one on the left was done by my friend.. the one on the right.. done by me.



see how the changes are almost too significant? i dont know if i like how they look. If you have any suggestions, please, feedback is welcome..

By the way that tattoo on his arm is a heart that says "Mom" on it.

It seems the key here is longer, more fluid strokes. Also, your friend's model seems to have some kind of intermediate green shade on it.

yeah, gonna need a blend... I will try and post a pic of my flesh on my Carnivian Warbeast from Hordes, it is my best flesh i have ever done... but i used 5 colors... (Codex grey, fortress grey, 2 fortress 1 bleached bone, 1 to 1 fortress/bleach, 2 bleached 1 fortress.) it turned out nice but the model is not done.

yeah, if you look at the big claw arm thingy you can see the blend... The idea being to reduce the drastic nature of changing colors. If you try it and it still does not work... i will try and make a tutorial or something for you.

Yep. I try to use at least three shades even for stuff like Grots or Gaunts. My Warriors, Monstrous Creatures, etc. get 5-9 depending on the model.

there is one more option, now i dont normally reccommend this cause i think it is kinda cheating...

take a dark grey base coat, then dry brush heavily with a lighter shade of grey (not TOO much lighter, your blending with drybrush.), then with a lighter still grey, but significantly lighter drybrushing, then with an almost white color just catch edges and highlights with a drybrush. Once all this is done... it will look like a greyscale orcsy thingy, just "glaze" it with dark green ink and watch it become a blended greener. it is a mostly quick and easy way to paint if you dont care what they look like, if you do you can try blending it with a brush and trying the green ink and see if you like it, cause it can always be stripped. (hmmm now i want to go to the 'rippers... )

I am still unsure of what you mean by "blend" do you mean use many shades to give the effect of real skin? cause thats what i'm getting from this.

You might get better results from something like:

Dark Angels Green
Bubonic Brown or Golden Yellow

the idea is to use the Dark Angels as base coat and add the yellowish colors to the dark angels it small amounts until you start getting something close to Goblin Green...in this way you can control the shade of the green MUCH better...Experiment some and see what you like the best...also dry brushing green then using a yellow ink glaze can be quite effective as well...It all depends on how much time you want to spend on a horde army...

You could always hightlight as you do, but do a 'heavier' coat of a mid way green before you do the goblin green highlight. It will cover more the more paint is on the brush (if your drybrushing I mean) and it would add an intermidiate layer to 'blend' the skin and shading together when viewed.

yep exactly

i dont know...its just what you like. I personally like strong colour differences. Why?
1) it saves you a lot of time by NOT doing all the different colours...for example, when i paint my kraken style nids i do:

* chaos black spray
* bubonic brown basecoat
* brown ink wash (70ink/30water)
* bleach bone highlight

I could also have done:

* chaos black spray
* bubonic brown basecoat
* brown ink wash (70ink/30water)
* bubonic brown highlights
* bubonic brown/bleached bone hightlights
* bleached bone highlight
* bleached bone/skull white highlights
* skull white highlights

Well, that includes many more stages, which take considerably more time. So you just need to weigh time vs looks.

2) my advantage is that I like strong differences/highlights. So the strong colour difference between the brown ink and the bleached bone looks much better to me than the more elaborate version of doing Kraken nids.

Therefore I like your model MUCHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH more than your friends! So I would say keep it as it is Models painted as you did yours look much better on the table because you see the colours standing out...

But thats just my opinion
