Matte or Gloss Varnish?

Hello, I am currently in the process of painting a forgeworld trygon, and I was told that the best way to preserve the paint job was to use a matte varnish and then put a layer of gloss varnish on top (if I want the glossy look that is).

First, which of the two options generally looks better for a nid army? I hear that the gloss look gives the army a slimy look, but some have told me that it makes the models look like shiny pieces of (please do not swear). I plan on painting around 10,000 points of these guys, so I want a clean overall look. If I must I can always try both on some test models, but I don't feel like shelling out cash for gloss varnish if I don't intend to use it!

Second, if I do decide to use a gloss varnish, does putting a matte varnish on the model beforehand alter the overall look once I put the gloss on in any way, or will it look identical to a model with only gloss varnish.

Well, you've been told wrongly... If you want a glossy look, go for gloss varnish. It's harder than matte varnish and therefore gives your model better protection. If you don't want the glossy look use, gloss varnish for protection and then use matte varnish to take away the gloss.

If for some reason you put gloss varnish on top of matte varnish it depends on how thick the layer of matte varnish is if you notice any difference or not.

Oh, and one general advice on matte varnish: Do not use it in humid environments, it will ruin your paintjob (makes the model look like sugar-glazed).

if you want gloss just use the gloss if you want matte jsut use the matte if you want a real strong coat of matte then use gloss and a couple coats of matte
