Custom fleets? Worth while or a waste of time

So I am more or less new to 40k. I have played off and on over the years jumping from one edition to the latest, ( this having done nothing but prove to be problematic )  I am more or less planing on sticking to 9th for some time to come  as my friend who i play with has not gotten their 10th edition codex.

Anyways, last i poked around and looked at things the options for custom fleet making left me well disheartened. I LOVE the concept of on paper both in game story, and mechanics having the ability to have my own fleet in name and title ( always had this anyways but it was just "fluff")  So you can imagine i was thrilled to find rules for building your own fleet from the ground up.  I quickly realized that what was provided was woefully lacking. From what i could tell it left you at a severe disadvantage, blocked out alot of abilities, relics, exc. And over all was just outright not worth the time.  This well just upset me and left me frustrated knowing how badly the ball was dropped on this.

Now again I am new, and A LOT  of things confuse and con-fuddle me in this game and i understand that Perhaps I have jsut missed something. My question is this, has anything changed, or is there a chance im reading things wrong? Are custom fleets at all worth the time to make or should i just surender to using one of the precon in the codex?

I mean, you can just...play anyway. That doesn't really matter: Codex vs non-Codex isn't really a power level thing or anything, it's loosely just options. I'm pretty sure DA got worse with their Codex and AdMech is still bad even with theirs

Now I'm confused? Has something changed? Yes, we're playing a different edition where custom doesn't exist? Are you still playing 9e? Then no nothing's changed because you're not playing the changes...

For 9e, custom fleets were a slight disadvantage as you didn't get relics, strats, or warlord traits. You can take the other route of looking at an official fleet and making your custom fleet a splinter of that fleet so you gain it's benefits.

Also, no one really cares if you take your nids and run them as any given fleet.

If I remember right, custom fleets were only useful for swarm lists going with the 6++ and something movement related. Still was worse than running the named fleets.

However, just run 10e. excluding some of the early issues with free strats and dev wounds, it is a better experience imo than 9th was.

The 6++ was an 8e/pre 9e codex option from psychic awakening.

Ah true… though I think that doesn’t change much. Swarm lists were still the only ones that really liked custom fleets; the 6” pre-game move and the option of cover or ignore AP-1 and ignore movement penalties.

I think the only other style that could work custom fleets was shooty monsters for lots of obsec and fallback & shoot.

So first off you lost me with the first part here,  how can one play without your codex? You wont have your data sheets for your own faction, nor any of the faction rules for that edition, from what i was told 10th is a total rework of the game more or less, so how would one play a faction that has not gotten their 10th ed codex?


To the second point As i stated i am still playing 9th because the people i play with are playing 9th, was not sure if in 9th Edition a supplement was released or anything like that     When i last played 9th had only just realy released and we had just gotten our own codex

As im learning about naritive / crusade play. Is this kinda do away with that disadvantage? As it does state no one. In any faction starts the battle with warlord traits, or relics

Alas i am broke, can’t afford core or codex, aaaand everyone i play with plays 9th still as their factions have not yet gotten  their codex  ( and also can’t be bothered to spend money on a new edddition when still learning 9th) 

it is on our list of things to do, but we wanted to learn one before moving on to the next ( every time we pick the game back up another new edition is released, and its at the point we have not even learned one. In full )

Doing a splinter fleet is ok to do in crusade. If your group is narrative focused, splinter fleets happen a lot.

You can also discuss with your group to allow you to run a custom fleet but with relics, strats, and warlord traits from an existing fleet.

It's narrative Play amongst friends so play for fun. If something is unbalanced, tweak it to bring it in to line.

They didn't release an entire new game update and leave literally everyone unable to play, even GW isn't that silly : see the Indexes on warhammer community downloads for all pre-Codex faction rules.

You sure you were playing our 9e Codex then? Nids were towards the tail end of the edition...The other problem with playing 9e is that if you're not familiar with any of the rules updates (which it sounds like you're not), nids are ridiculously OP.

Oh yeah. It's been so long I'd completely forgotten how that worked (problem with asking about an edition most of us won't have played for over a year ): I also ran obsec+ignore penalties at the very end. There's probably a few other combos that could work, but losing out on power/strat and WLT/relic options as well, it's basically only worth if none of those give anything useful. Which is generally going to be a highly specialised list rather than a narrative list.

Core rules and Index army rules are free for 10e. As stated previously, the index detachments are generally on par or stronger than the additional detachments granted by the codex. 10e is great in the way that the codex doesn’t change the army, just gives more options.

Imo the waste of time is playing an edition that isn’t current and then taking to the internet to ask questions about it. Why don’t you just make up some rules to play and then the game will be how you like it? 9th wasn’t particularly fantastic as far as editions went anyway.
