I believe ranged but I'm not sure.

Because Tyranids can’t have decent anti-tank units. B) Both are bad. Melee warriors are decent in Vanguard with Primes attached.

Build them as you wish. You need to be aware that editions change. Units that were poor performers in 9th are now top dogs in the 10th edition.
Build a varied collection and you'll always have something decent to field.
