Tyranid model transportation

So how does everyone transport their swarm - esp these days as we have a LOT of big models in the army now and they eat up space in a case super fast.

I'd love to hear what others have used and also see photos of cases in use (really helps put perspective on the size of the case and the storage capacity and such)



Right now I find myself eyeing things like the PACK XL which almost feels like its too big in terms of just being a huge case to lug around; but at the same time feels like it might be one of the more practical that lets you get everything in 1 bag as opposed to carrying two or three about

I used to use a bunch of homemade containers made out of shipping/packing materials I'd salvaged from work. It worked well for the weird shaped mess that is our army (crones >< ) but it was also a gigantic hassle to make and them load them up to go to a game.

I have some of the nice travel cases w/ magnetic trays, but I've only used them with the more uniformly shaped death guard and custodes. Would work just fine for tyranids though.

I've got the magna rack xl. It's one of the older ones and does not have the removable trays though. For the bottom rack, I've got it set up to about 7" for a flyrant and will put some other big monsters there. I've got a two smaller gaps, one of which is big enough for tfexes and another that works for tyrant guard. The top has an inch high gap that I use for gaunts/genestealers. I had originally envisioned that my collection could fit in there. I was way wrong and only part of it fits there (this got worse since I got 2x leviathan) so I have some boxes as well that are not organized and are a jumble of unpainted models.

Transporting the XL is a bit difficult. I figured out I can fit it between the passenger seat and the back seat if I move the seat all the way to the front. It will not stand up in my trunk as I do not have a hatchback and it will not sit in the front seat.

As I do not have the slideable racks, packing and unpacking can be time-consuming. Models usually need to go back in in about the same place they got taken out. I usually show up a bit early to games, remove the rack and set it on the table. I'll unpack my army and put the rack in the case and will pack casualties as the game progresses to free up the table as the FLGS I go to has strict timelines most days.

Yeah I've got my slider ones setup side by side on a table right now so I can't slide them out (so right now they are like non-sliding) and if I were using that as a bag it would drive me nuts having to reach inside to get stuff out and such. Sliders very much make it a lot easier to move things around.

Old army ammo crate. I think it's a 155 round arty crate. Lined the inside with foam. I think the foam was more expensive than the crate.

Banker boxes and bubble wrap. Nothing too elaborate. If a model breaks I fix it.

Angular shopping basket with a lid that can be zipped close. Piece of sheet metal on the bottom, part of a PC case side panel that I cut to size. Magnets on the base of all big models, or unwieldy ones (like Venomthropes or Warriors).

Imho the best transport solution for bigger models, except for air travel. For all practical intents and purposes it costs nothing, offers the highest flexibility and can transport even the biggest models. I don't have anything larger/taller than a flying HT, but could also transport several Knights, Acharon, Nagash, Silent King or a Tessaract Vault.

Regular infantry and compact models (like Zoantrophes) I use the (recently discontinued) cases from GW. Going to use cases from Feldherr going forward, already using one for my 30k army.

I have a few "really useful boxes" with a steel sheet stuck to the bottom. Glued magnets into all the bases, works great. Really efficient use of space when you don't actually need any packing material between models.

used to use a tub with metal sheets and magnetize everything... this is after I moved away from battlefoam as it was getting too pricey for my model addiction.

Splurged on an A-case and I love it... the flexibility of the removable tray system is very nice. I only use a case for transport as I store models in display cases.

not cheap though.

I am in the process of converting all my storage from foam cases (KR Multicases) to A cases in order to limit the space I use on storage, as well as for travelling ease.

I am not going to dare put flyrants and similarly big models with specific breaking points like the tail in the A cases, but everything else, even the old metal walkrants, love the metallic trays and especially gaunts or aberrants can be put into very little space this way.
