Inverted Shading/Lava/Plasma Effect?

I've been thinking about doing like white base case then highlight into progressively darker blues, so the nids look like they're plasma almost
Seems like it could have a cool and creepy/alien feel to it

I haven't been able to find any examples of this though, has anyone seen it?

Also I'm not a terribly experienced painter, does this effect have a specific name so I could look up the technique further?

Have a look at some painting tutorials for the Eldar Avatar of Khaine, he has the glow effect - just replace reds and yellows with blues.
