Big gun dilemma

Hi all,

I’m trying to decide which to include in a list- barbed heirodule or tyrannofex with rupture cannon.

Tyrannofex is great for the big shot against a single tank but with only 2 shots a turn, bad rolls could really hurt. It’s also cheaper in points and more manoeuvrable due to base size.

Heirodule is great anti-infantry fire which could take lighter tanks down if needed. It’s far better in combat, but with the huge base I’m worried about terrain being an issue. Also, I’d need to lose a gant squad as well as the tyrannofex to fit it in points wise.

Both are pretty similar defensively and likely to get targeted down, tyrannofex -1 damage would help there.


Has anyone run either/both and can give feedback on which they prefer?

I don’t think you can go wrong with either of them. They are both very good units.

The Barbie’s main problem is that while he has a lot of shots, the are all 2 damage at -2 Ap. While this is good against light to medium infantry, it only amounts to chip damage on heavy vehicles. Still, once the vehicles are gone the Barbie will be much more useful than a rupture cannon.

The t-fex’s problem is his low shot count and swingy damage. There are going to be many times you wish your t-fex had acid spray instead of that rupture cannon.

In the end I think the t-fex is the way to go. It’s easier to make those few shots more consistent than to boost poor Ap. Sustained hits, command re-rolls, and the heavy keyword will put shots on target. And let’s face it, that rupture cannon has a monstrous strength and Ap, something that is lacking in the tyranid army.

Barbed offence is only good if you get into combat: otherwise it's arguably worse than a single exo (into e.g. T10 2+ or 3+ /w cover, it is worse) while being over twice the cost, and defensively it's worse than a t-fex despite being 100 pts more.

Now, if you get into combat it's good, but minimal mobility and big base with mediocre defensive stats for the cost, it's very unlikely to make combat where you want it. At which point I definitely think t-fex. Or exo, exo's good too

Unfortunately I don’t have an exo atm so that options out the window- it seems most the best stuff I don’t have right now (exo, haruspex, biovores)

Back on topic, thanks for the feedback, I think I know the tfex is the way to go, just really want a reason to give my big guy a run out again! With the tfex bringing an extra unit too it makes a lot more sense I think
