What do you think the Tyranids are building?

Between Hive Fleet Tiamet's continent-sized psychic mound of flesh and chitin as introduced in the 8th Edition lore, and now in 10th, Leviathan covering most of a planet in a fleshy membrane and holding the non-Tyranid life forms in suspended animation, and then enacting a landing on an already dead, lifeless world in the Bastior system and building massive Hive structures upon it, what in the Warp are the Tyranids actually up to? This seems to be a bit more sinister than just eating everything now, they're creating things. Any theories?

My bet would be on a kind of a psychic beacon to send a signal through intergalactic void to call in more bugs from other galaxies.

The continent sized hive mind is the start of an administration centre to process paperwork. The membrane is a web to trap the unwary races in meetings and negotiation. And the structures on a dead world are a pointless civil engineering task, to soak up unspent biomass at the end of the fiscal year, so Tyrants don't get their resources cut for not using up there entire budget.

When a new Norn Queen comes to power, expect the continent, the membrane and work on dead world to be stopped. And then exactly the same to be started somewhere else, but with extra efficiency savings and thus half the budget.

Alternatively, the continent hive mind is a pernicious and amoral marketing and sales department for pension investments, asking other races to send their elderly and vulnerable to the care of the membrane residents home. When the inquistion come to find out what the Great Devourer has done with the biomass of the elderly, then luxury timeshare appartments, outside the tax juristiction of the Imperium, will be have to be built and given away as bribes.

The scouting and migration from another galaxy to gain a toe hold in a place with plentiful prey has been a success. The nomadic phase must end, nolonger inefficient strip mining planets, leaving behind ruined ecologies. Work begins on more effective terra forming planets for permanent residence. Synapse planets for living and reproduction. Membrane planets for laboratories, research, inteigence gathering and genetic archiving. Taking on new dead planets for pioneering new territory, mining inorganic materials, sustainable biomass cultivation, and heavy manufacture.

Converting the milky way galaxy to be more like home.

So you're telling me the Nids are turning the galaxy into a FARM?!

The unexplainable needs to provide more questions for every 'answer' that is discovered, or you just get turned into The Borg after Voyager. Or the Reapers after Mass Effect 3.

And given the state of the awful writing staff these days, it's as likely to be massively embarrassing as it is to be totally dropped and forgotten (because marines aren't explicitly involved).

what are these structures? who know, may be amplificators to call more 'nids or something else used to unify all the fleets around for the galaxy or.. boh something that human can not udnerstand!

but... we know that gw many time messed up the factions background...

i hope don't use this to transform 'nids in zerg...

There's definitely a greater level of mystery to them now and I hope GW leaves at least some of these questions unanswered. Bizarre extragalactic aliens that show up and start eating everything and now they're suddenly building weird stuff for an unfathomable purpose just makes them that much more scary and alien.
