Background first: I inherited some models, and have played a few games (500-2000pts) with a friend who dances with Space Wolves. In 9th, I could keep most of the games close by body count (we have yet to get to the point of actually playing missions). We have done one game with 10th and I was pretty well blocked out most of the game. Keep in mind that I built this list primarily to test usefulness of models I own, but here is the list I played last week against a friend.
Hive Tyrant- HVC, Crushers, and Adaptive Biology-Mainly due to this being my first build/kitbash
Broodlord- Synaptic Lynchpin-My HQ's are thin so almost always take him when playing
OOE-Second build/bash (put the OOE skull on a Tusked jaw)
Winged Tyrant- MBS and Talons and Alien Cunning-Mainly to see efficacy of Paroxysm
10x hormagants- Screening test
2x1 Biovores- Advance blocking
1x Carnifex- HVC, Crushers, Bio and Spine w/OOE attached
10x Genestealers- w/BL attached
5x Genestealers- Decoy
1x Lictor- Testing
1x Mawloc- I like the model despite its general lack of effect on the board
3x Raveners- Testing
2x3 Melee Warriors- Testing
1x3 Ranged Warriors- Testing
1x3 Tyrant guard- w/HT attached
1x3 Zoanthropes- Testing
Board favored shooting we just wanted to roll some dice and weren't too concerned about terrain
I got 1st turn which was basically positioning, followed by his turn which was more of the same. He did run a stormhawk (? flying transport) which immediately disgorged a load of bloodclaws in my back field. I retaliated w Rapid Ingress on Mawloc>TftD>4 mortals (total) vs 4 units in range and free Rapid Ingress on Lictor to catch BC's in my Deployment Zone.
My next turn I completely duffed all my rolls. At one point I was looking for 3x 4's to wound and came up with all 3's. Charges failed, most units failed to make it to wound rolls and all but one damage was saved on 4++.
His 3x6 Thunderwolf cav's (1 with Wolf Lord and 1 with Canis) easily made all their moves and subsequent charges. Shooting was disastrous with his Land Raider with melta unloaded into and murdered my (then) full-strength Flyrant.
Turn 3 was better because my dice started to feel sorry for me. I was able to deliver payback to the Land Raider with OOE crushing the (please do not swear) out of it and his lone carnie delivered the final couple of wounds to bring it down. Unfortunately, it exploded and grievously damaged my fex.
The BL+GS were successfully protected from a cavalry charge by the 5xGS and were able to eliminate that unit over two turns with a surprising assist from the hormagaunts inflicting 2 wounds.
Biovore shenanigans definitely bought me some time but after both armies spread out, the shooting was inconsistent at best. I did not benefit from all these indirect fire issues people experienced.
Warriors of both types were pretty useless for me, but they were able to plink a couple wounds here and there.
The lictor was scary until the aforementioned flying transport disintegrated it.
Mawloc, as I mentioned earlier, is just cool looking and I was looking to fish for mortals. I will say that I personally like the new TftD. The previous iteration left a full turn for the opponent to avoid the marker and this was the first time i was able to get some work out of it. It was, of course, melted immediately after by a Predator variant.
The Raveners were ok but I feel that I mis-utilized them due to being short of warm matter to throw around the table.
Zoanthropes, while high on damage potential, were cursed by my dice and strategic habit of hiding them during deployment.
Tyrant Guard did what they do, namely soaked up a good bit of damage before it could reach my Tyrant.
Overall, the two of us that played had about an equal amount of strategic misplays and missed opportunities but ultimately I feel like I need new dice. It would be easy to blame low ap and little to no invulns across the roster but I only play for fun. It is far more fun to believe that my luck is so bad that it gives my opponent great luck. I think the total damage tally for one unit of cavalry charging ended around 15-20 wounds for my Zoanthropes, of which I saved one.
