Probably a dumb reaper of obliterax question.

Hi all, 

I’m due to play my 2nd game with the new codex tomorrow, and only my 4th game of 9th, so I wanted to clarify a likely dumb question.

It states each time an attack is made, if that successfully attacks wounds it does a mortal wound in addition. So, does this mean when the model makes all its attacks, if I wound 1 or more times I’ll just do one mortal wound only? Or say I’m using a flyrant and make 5 attacks with it and manage to wound 5 times, then the target takes 5 mortal wounds?

Treat each dice as an "attack". So 5 attacks mean rolling 5 dice, with a 2+ WS and rerolls of 1, you will most likely hit all of them. Then on the wound roll, most things you will wound on a 3+, and you also have 1 free wound re-roll on the tail. So each attack that WOUNDS automatically means 1 mortal wound.. that is in addition to any normal damage the enemy would take when failing the saving throw.

So if all 5 wound, that is 5 MW, and the enemy still has to take 5 saving throws, and each fail, also means 3 damage.

If you have Adrenal glands on him, you can also use a stratagem for 1 CP, to give him D3 extra attacks.
Pair that with toxin sacs, and each hit roll of 6, also auto-wounds,

and you have a lot of damage that can go through.

Also no FNP on the attacks with the reaper.

Also note that the Mortal Wounds are allocated AFTER normal damage for all the attacks. So if you get 5 wounds and they fail 3 saves, they allocate the 3 failed saves first, dealing 3 damage each. Then they allocate the 5 mortal wounds. This is important for multi wound targets.

The MWs also mostly bypass FNPs as well. However, FNPs can still be used for the MWs if they are allocated to a model that did not have an attack allocated to it. So if your 3 successful wounds are allocated to 3 models in a 5-man unit and those models all fail their saves, the last two models would benefit from the unit’s FNP for the 3 MWs generated from the Reaper (no attacks were allocated to the models). If the third model saved the last wound, it could not ignore the MWs with a FNP because an attack was allocated to it (4th/5th models would still have no attacks allocated).

I believe that ITC ruled that you can take FNP vs those mortal wounds, IIRC

That would probably be the WTC ruling:

FNP can be used against mortal wounds caused by attacks with Reaper of Obliterax as the ability only affectsmodels that are subject to its attacks, and the mortal wounds may spill over to other models than those that were subjected to any attacks. Rather than make this overly complicated, we are allowing FNP rolls against all MW’s caused by the ability.

They acknowledge that the ruling isn't 100% correct and is for the sake of speed of play/simplicity. The alternative is slow rolling saves vs the Reaper and tracking attack allocations.

The spilling MWs are not "an attack made with this weapon allocated to an enemy model" so any kind of FnPs can be taken against them - this is simply reading with understanding. The ruling that all MWs can be saved is lazy and cuts a bit of Reapers power.

Most of that lost power is only vs single model units, and more specifically those with phase caps which can blank the MWs (which feels wrong) under the WTC ruling. I play the single model units as RAW, and multi-model units similar to the WTC (with a small variation).
