New rules in regards to making your own hive fleet

Let me start off by saying I’m rather new to the game and I really enjoy the tinted one of my favorite things that I’ve gone through defined is the whole aspect of creating your own army not just buy rules bye-bye lore as well I was very happy to see a small section dedicated to creating your own hi fleet.

One thing eludes me however On page 60 and 61 of the tear needed ninth edition Kodex it goes in to say that you can either select a splinter fleet or selecting to biomorphologies The section about splinter fleet goes in to tell you about stratagems and psyker powers and how they work I E using whatever it is from the original hi fleet that you chose as your splinter fleet.

However it mentions absolutely nothing in regards to either stratagem or psyker abilities.

So my question is this if I choose to truly make my own hi fleet by choosing to separate biomorphologies over selecting a sprinter fleet do I lose all ability to use any form of high fleet granted stratagem and hive fleet specific psyker ability?

You lose everything that's related to a specific hive fleet. You can choose to be a splinter fleet, at which point you're locked into the adaptive and hyper adaptive, so this is mechanically fleet-but-worse. You get some of the rules, but don't have any trade offs or upside. So don't do this.

Was sadly afraid of this , though if I read splinter fleet correctly it’s quite literally plug in custome name in exchange for one of the main fleets.

Have to say I am kinda saddened they would do that, such a unbalanced trade off

Just use the main fleet rules with whatever custom fleet you're using. Nobody worth playing will care.

Custom rules are in a weird spot: outside marines, who get upside, choices and everything while still getting to take basically all of the parent rules, you're stuck with 'no extras' or 'literally just them but worse', which is pointless.

I feel like this is an under sight as it straight up tells you to copy everything else from it

Looking forward to making my own higher fleet I saw it was an option and now having read through it I am greatly disappointed it’s such a massive drawback I have to ask why it was even included in the first place .
The main fleets aren’t bad I was just excited to make my own and have it playable but oh well guess that’s not quite an option here who knows maybe they’ll release some sort of amendment or expand upon it later.

Assuming games workshop even does that

I'd recommend making your own color scheme for your custom fleet. It allows you to really personalize your army. Additionally, if you want to run a custom fleet at some point, the official rules will let you. If you want to try out any of the main fleets, the rules will let you.

I think the official rules state you can paint how you want, but they won't let you swap to a different sub faction trait if you're painted as another one. Ex) if you paint as leviathan, then they don't want you running your army as behemoth.

Yeah still plan on doing that just sucks that the balancing is so lopsided , like sure I can pick and chose biomorphologies but I lose the options for relics , psyker , and stratagems. It is so far off balance it feels like the whole consept was an afterthought. Expecialy when it is an extreamly easy fix

Ever since they added the custom fleet option, it has always been not as good due to the lack of specific fleet options.

I think GW didn't want to make custom fleets automatically better than a specific one by giving it just straight up more versatility so they gave specific fleets special powers and stuff, but they over corrected and the fleet specific goodies are too good to sacrifice in the name of versatility.

Yeah, generally the case (esp with us having powers in addition to strat/WLT/relic: there'll generally be one, maybe two things in there you want, and the power level of the custom traits is generally ~same, or even less than main). But it's very much not something that's always worse: see Necrons, guard, CWE, DE, GSC (and technically Tau. Not sure on knights, but I think they do as well) all having meta builds with custom traits. And if you get everything on top of being able to choose custom traits, you'll rarely take the main traits (see: SM) outside of the subfactions that have very strong unreplicable traits.

We're just in an awkward spot with this because our main fleets have just under half the options of a custom with the hyper adaptives, and the adaptives bit is (generally) weaker because they're more niche for the adaptive bit (oh wait). Would open up more options if we still had the flex ability, but even that's worse than the main fleets for...some reason.
