Hive guard and flyrant in GW terrain

So I’m getting the itch to get back to my tyranids again after mostly a year running Blood Angels. As I’m playing with list ideas, my question is…are tyrant guard necessary to protect a leviathan flyrant in the setting of GW terrain? Struggling to squeeze everything I want into 2000 pts

Necessary? No. Very useful? Yes.
Deepstrike is what they are mainly protecting the big guy from.
Then they are a durable and reasonably hard hitting second/third wave to fight for board control. Their -4ap claws are juicy.
I personally like them but ymmv.

Yes, I'd consider them mandatory on any table while Tyrants must be the WL and the WL is needed for Imperatives to work. This is especially so for Leviathan since most TO's/opponents will likely say the WL is required for Hive Nexus as well.

I don't really play on GW terrain, but from what little I have it can be awkward to hide flyrant wings on some deployments with going off board or being forced to go wide along the length of the obscuring: generally hideable, but t-guard give you surety and protection against mobile threats. With how important reaper/WL is...and t-guard are pretty OK just on rate.

Going wide along terrain isn’t an issue as the GW ruins are much wider then the flyrant wings. You can easily position one wing in the ruin to hide very well.

Without Tyrant Guard, you're going to be forced to deploy the Flyrant all the way behind the large ruins, which makes him very far from the action. With Tyrant Guard, they can hide inside the ruins and allow you to deploy the Flyrant centrally and closer to the enemy's deployment zone, which greatly effects their deployment options. Then the Tyrant Guard can move behind the central ruins in Layout 2, or further into the big ruins in Layout 1, to provide a safe place for the Flyrant to run back to with Overrun.

IMO, a melee flyrant is not worth running without Tyrant Guard.

It depends on the specific layout I believe: the main feature of the GW terrain is the set footprint terrain, and then the physical LoS blockers etc on there can vary. But you should usually be able to hide t-guard in those style ruins.

They are usually 2+ smaller ruins set on a 12x12” piece of acrylic sheet (the 4 large squares in either layout).

These were my thoughts exactly. I’ll be playing a practice game today against Necrons, so we’ll see how it goes. But all my lists so far have a included flyrant/tguard.
