Physical codex or through the app?

Should I even buy the 9the edition codex or just get it through the gw app. For when they update stuff

I don't think you can gain full access to the new codexes through the app. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Personally, I bought the physical codex as I like to have the books and also use codex purchases to support my LGS.

You get it in the app by buying the book and then entering the code inside the book into the app.

Only the 8th edition codices are free in the app. It is my understanding that you have to buy the physical codex to unlock that codex in the app.

You can access basic unit datasheets for free in the app (essentially the same as the in-box assembly instructions, with just profile & weapon stats). However all special rules, stratagems, etc require the code found inside the printed 9E book. That's the only official way to get digital rules currently. The app also doesn't show any fluff-related codex content, just rules.

The upside is that the app gets updated automatically with any points, errata & balance changes, which is especially useful for the keyword changes GW have been doing lately such as adding or removing CORE from units.

What some people do is buy a printed codex and trade codes to unlock two factions for the price of one.

Not that I know of. I'm assuming it's that someone has the physical and one person has the digital codex

That makes sense, though missing out on the digital codex corrections might be painful to keep track of with only a physical copy (depending on how much of the many mistakes/issues they fix in the first errata).

The Warhammer app itself is free to use. If you buy the codex you can still use the app for the digital codex. If you don't pay for the subscription you miss out on some of the bells and whistles (like their army builder) but that's all.
