Advice on repainting miniatures

I got a bunch of gaunts that I did in the hydra color scheme but now I want them to be Gorgon. Can I just primer over them again?

I'd soak the models in simple green overnight and then scrub them with a firm cheap toothbrush first. Relatively little work to remove 80-90% of paint so you don't lose detail.

Yes you can.

The thing you have to realize is that every layer you coat a model with reduces the amount of detail on the model. Primer +1 layer, paint +1 layer, re-prime +1 layer, re-paint +1 layer, you get the idea.

The real question here is are you willing to spend the time and go through the hassle of stripping the paint off your models or are you okay with potentially losing details on your models?

For gaunts I’d say no, it’s not worth the hassle. They’ll be mixed in with dozens of fresh gaunts and nobody is going to look at them from less than an arm’s length away. Now if it was a center piece of my army, like say a hive tyrant, then stripping the model to bare plastic is a must as everyone is going to want to look at it.

If you are going to strip models in this quantity buy an ultrasonic cleaner. I have one anyway for my motorcycle maintenance, but for little more than the cost of a knight you will shave hours and hours off the time it takes to strip them.


On the other hand, it's gribblies, just leave it as is. No one cares what Hive Fleet you play anyway. I started with Levi and stayed with it even when they were the worst HF for nearly a decade. I typically still played Levi because that's how mine were painted, but no one really cares. My painting has gotten better over the years but I still don't go back and repaint, it's nice to see how my painting has improved over the years and it's not like you will ever paint all the models you own anyway.

Depends on how this model looks, care to share pictures?
Otherwise yes, you could prime over, that's what I did for most of my repainted models.
Otherwise burning alcool is good (please take the necessary precautions)
