Warriors - how many? Unit sizes?

Anybody here who has already experimented with Warriors as troop tax, or even the backbone of an army?

How many do we need to make them functional?

Units of three for pure backfield duty?

Units of five for general use?

One (or maybe two) units of nine if going really heavy?

Tyranid Prime with Direct Guidance WL trait only useful for units of nine, or do 5-man units have enough combined ranged/melee output?

Was thinking about an all-Synapse Levi list, 2x winged HT, Neuro, Trygon Prime (The Passenger + Shard Lure combo), with Warriors, Zoans, and whatever else. Rough draft has 28 Warriors with 260 points left over. Maybe PoM + Tyranid Prime, and/or Maleceptor depending on # of Warriors.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I like units of 5, they have great output for the price and enough durability to stay on Objectives through non-dedicated firepower. I take them mainly for Troop tax for two Patrols, usually with a 3rd unit in there since they are priced well and have Obj Sec. I usually play the Warriors as a second wave to my Obj Sec monsters though, units of 9 are probably required if you want to build a Warrior backbone. That might get CP heavy though doing -1Dmg in shooting and melee every turn, since the opponent doesn't lose much from going at the unit in two phases.

Warriors are functional all right. So far I've played them in 3-4 units of five models. Will experiment with a maxed unit. I find I don't want them hanging around my backfield, wasting their awesome close combat potential, you might want to consider some other cheap unit for that. 30pts of Pyrovore can sit on a homefield objective. I would say five Warriors is the sweet spot, 6+ models cost you 2cp for -1dmg strat. I could see 9 strong working (3 Deathspitters, 3 Venom cannons, 3 Barbed Stranglers) but then it becomes a focus in your army and you probably only want 1 such unit.

Another option is Gestation Sac, 1CP for a free unit of rippers works well for holding back objectives. Either is better than spending 75pts on Warriors sitting in the backfield and will likely stay that way while BS are free.

As far as I have played, a 9 man unit doesnt want to be weighed down with extra point cannons, they need/want to be up the board. Deathspitters are free and provide some chaff clearing but the main strength of the warrior unit is how many str8(+) melee attacks they can deliver.

Now full disclosure i have only been running a single 9man unit and they do well because of the buffs they can get from the army and the 2 walking tyrants and 3 carnifexes all with HVCs slow walking up the board whilst focusing down big guns in the enemy back line and the other army elements that protects the warriors from being charged first or suffering small arms fire is the 2 25man units of h.gaunts that are very reliable turn 1 charges. Gargoyles and genestealers have also provide the same function but h.gaunts make me happier.

Going all in on warriors as a army design is a questionable choice considering they really dont want to have to answer all target profiles, i think they can, but there are better choices. I think they shine at ensuring there are no survivers. Fall back and charge the h.gaunts deeper into the enemy lines and finish the enemy units left behind with the warriors.

Advice for the OP and your all warrior army, 3man units with 2 cannons and primes with cannons are good back field artillery units, midfield units remain hybrid cc/ranged and could probably get away with only 5models but would look to have 3 units of these for objective control accross the board, but for forward bound hitting the front line, 9 with either 4 swords or dual swords and talons (dont forget ag and flesh hooks here either) 2 units like that at most I'd assume.

Im still learning this not-the-codex codex but it seems intuitive so far.

Thanks for the input to far. I'm not set on using an all-Warrior army, I'm looking to build an all-Synapse army. Non-tournament, regular play, new Tempest of War deck, possibly Crusade.

Trying to get a feel of how many Warriors are not enough, and how many are too many. Will make a thread in listbuilding later.
