Getting back into 40k: Updating my ancient Tyranids

Hi guys,



Recently a friend suggested started up a little 40k league. I haven't played the game in years, but I do have a small old school Tyranids army in my pile of shame, which should be a fun little project to paint up.



Now my question for you; can I make any kind of legal army out of these mini's, or is it really hopeless?



This is what I found:



- 12x Termagaunts (6 with Spike Rifle and 6 with Fleshborer)

- 12x Hormagaunts

- 3x Warriors (with Venom Cannon, Devourer and Spinefist)

- 16x Genestealers

- Biovore

- 3x Spore Mine

- Lictor

- Zoanthrope

- Carnifex



Feels like it should be enough for a little basic army right?



And maybe another question: Has anyone here ever made an updated 1st edition army, with matching sculpts/STLs for the newer units? Love to see some inspiration

You could field a 500pt army using the Zoanthrope as a Neurothrope. I don’t think you could reach 1000pts though.

Another alternative is to use the carnifex as old one eye. Both would work for HQ

It's enough to get a learning game in. As mentioned, you'll have to run the Zoanthrope as a Neurothrope. You'll need the HQ and Zoanthropes aren't playable in units of 1 anymore.

As far as building your collection. It will take a lot of hunting to find 2nd ed. Tyranids (which is what I'm guessing you have). In large enough numbers to field a modern army. And your options will be extremely limited since a lot of our current units didn't exist back then.

The hunt is part of the fun of an army like this.

The new units are mostly the big guys right?

Are base sizes in 40k still kind of vague? My Hormagaunts come on 25mm bases, with would probably be a lot more stable if I put them on 32mm bases. Would that be ok?

Bases sizes are vague in 40k. For example warriors today are shipped with a mix of 40mm vs 50mm bases. Top level tournaments will specify base sizes to standardize play (it can matter for high level tournaments).

However, for 99% of games or tournaments, small base size changes will not matter and no one will care. I'd say go for it.

Yeah current dex running a battalion with neuro and ooe as hq you could include almost everything for 800-900pts depending on upgrades. If you cut a troops choice then 750pts becomes really easy with a patrol lead by a neuri and with a regular fex. Id probably drop the tgants in this list.

Now in the new codex this could be about 1k patrol with all models included and those stealers will be elite slots 2x8 with a deathleaper instead of a regular lictor.... idk for sure would need to check wahapiedia but itll be an interesting list either way.

I understand that a Biovore should fit on a 60mm base these days.. mine would fit nicely on a 32mm ;p

I think that's a summary of what LVO uses. Note: GW has stated that your models can be kept on the sizes they came on originally.

It would probably look a bit strange in a current game to have a Biovore on a square 40mm base ;p

Plus it will give me a bit more room for cool scenic bases.

Having said that: Anyone have a look to cool Alien Planet base STLs?

I come from Warhammer Fantasy, so my view is that 40k is very much a round world ;p

However, I'd love to see your army, it's probably nice and classic then.
