Looking to come back to 40k, what’s good now?

Evening all,

I’ve been out of the game for almost four years, I vaguely remember what I used to run, but that was for 8th. I’m still catching up on 9th and was wondering how nids are doing and what’s good? From the look of some of the army lists, it seems to be a couple of HQ, loads of warriors, and then some extras. Is that the general meta now?

I know there used to be a thread for unit run down, apologies if I’ve missed the latest one, but I couldn’t see it anywhere.

That is a difficult questions to awnser. Short awnser things are good on general.

GW now do 'patches' every 6 months that adjust points and rebalances that affects the game. This time around it includes mission updates, and it shakes things up a bit. Those points changed today, so data is not in.

GSC in general: We used to be the worst. But new codex seems good on first impressions.

Tyanids: Suffer from and old codex, and bad advertising. We are not in fact a melee army, we are a shooting army. Keep that in mind and you should do fine. Tyranids codex is old with bad units and good stratagems. The leviathan supplement (that includes blood of baal) makes leviathan better. There is a white dwarf update that include Crusher Stampede that gives monsters a bonus, but you can not include 1 wound models.

Cassual armies are fun.

In the competetive scene Dark Eldar, Admech, Orks and Sister is Battle is A+. All of them got nerfed. Grey Knight is the new strong meta. And so are tyranids! The game will update in another 6 months, so do not chase the meta to strongly.

Our good/staple units and why:


- Swarmlord (double move a unit, decent fighter)
- Warriors (Synaptic Link ability gives +1 on hit rolls)
- Termagants (equipped with Devourers combo great with Synaptic Links of Warriors and Maleceptors)
- Hive Guard (great shooting without LOS and amazing with buffs (double shooting, rerolls and exploding/autohits on 6s)
- (Maleceptors (in combination with Termagants, Synaptic Link gives AP-1 on 6s))
- Dimachaeron (runs like a madman and stabs things)
- Hierodules (tanky objective holders or assault monsters)


Also, with the new Crusher Stampede rules (you can't take any models with less than 3 wounds and swarms, monsters receive 1D reduction, a 5++ and count as wounds remaining on objectives) all monsters got even better.

Thanks, I always preferred the monsters over the swarms, but used swarms as they were good. The crusher stampede is right up my alley for being able to use more monsters 😁
