So I got in the first (proper) games in a slow-grow league starting at 500pts this month; had a blast and gained a ton of experience!
Here are some photos and a quick synopsis of what I remember of the evenings two games (was a bit of a whirlwind!).
Firstly the list I bought:
- 500pts, Combat Patrol Game size (3CPs)
- Leviathan Hive Fleet, Patrol Detachment, (1CP to start with strats below)
- Neurothrope with Void Crown relic, Alpha Leader Beast (-1CP) and Swarm Leader w/l trait
- 5 Warriors (/w enhanced resistance), Deathspitters/Boneswords, Adrenal Glands, Bioweapon Bond Synaptic Link
- x2 squads of 14 Termagants with Fleshborers
- Carnifex with dual monstrous scything talons, spore cysts, adrenal glands, Progeny of the Hive Fleet (-1CP), Murderous Size
Mission: was Resupply from Incursion missions - table size was reduced for 500pts.
Secondaries - I took the mission secondary, Warp Ritual and Stranglehold on both games
Game 1 (vs. GSC):
No pictures on this first game - was a bit rabbit in headlights!
Played a competitive GSC player (off to a GT tomorrow) who was very nice and patient with me but incredibly quick and efficient - we we pretty much wrapped up in under an hour by turn 3!
Turn 1...
I got first turn - moved out the two squads of termgants onto the the middle objections to the left and right of the board and moved the warriors and neurothrope towards the middle. Carnifex supported the termgants on the right flank.
Combination of blips, a lot of units in reserve and others hiding behind obscuring terrain that were revealed I had nothing to shoot at - Neurothrope was successful for warp ritual.
GSC appeared - acolytes with hand flamers moved forwards, got an incredible roll for number of shots (think it was about 25 or something!) and managed to virtually wipe out one squad of Termagants leaving 1 left.
Termagants on left side got lit up by a combination of Neophytes and Ridgerunners, getting crossfire on them and taking their numbers down significantly. Neophytes and ridgerunners charge the Termagants and lock them up.
Turn 2...
Carnifex (with onslaught cast on him) makes a cracking advance over to the acolytes, charges them and brings them just down to 1 (who escapes behind my lines to get broodswarm!).
Termagants on the left fall back, Warriors shoot the Neophytes nearly wiping them out - the charge the ridgerunners doing surprisingly little damage (need better boneswords!).
Neurothrope gets off warp ritual again.
And from there on it becomes a world of hurt...
Out comes out a big blob of guys with Rocksaws and absolutely melts the Carnifex in one round of fighting.
Kellermorpth deep strikes behind my warriors, uses worm-tooth rounds and manages to get 10 hits I think and virtually wipes out the warriors (who had crossfire and exposed on them) with damage 3 shots (should have used Unyielding Chitin in hindsight) and after that the game pretty much falls apart.
We went through Turn 3 but I get tabled and we talk through the remaining rounds.
Scores at the end:
Tyranids - 15 for primary, 7 for warp ritual, 6 for stranglehold, 10 for painted = 38
GSC - 45 for primary, 6 for Raise the Banners, 15 for To the Last, 15 for Broodswarm, 10 for painted = 91
Game 2 (vs. Dark Angels):
This game was a lot more chilled and we were both equally inexperienced so ended up being a lot more relaxing (bunch of photos at the end).
He had a primaris chaplain, 5 hellblasters and two squads of 5 intercessors (/w power swords for the sergeants).
This was one of those games where everything went 'right' for me and I was rolling very hot where my opponent was a little unlucky at times.
He got first turn but decided not to move out and use his +1 to hit for being stationary. The hellblasters were deployed in the second floor of the ruins and targetted by Warriors. He was using the assault version of hellblasters and decided not to overcharge in fear of losing models - he also didn't use weapons of the dark age which I thought would have been a given? We talked about this afterwards.
The dense terrain the Warriors were behind cancelled out the +1 to hit and he managed to only get one down to 1 wound. The intercessors took out a couple of Termgants but the damage was insignificant on the first turn.
On my turn, I moved out aggressively as before with the Termagants but I left the warriors in place behind the dense terrain. Neurothrope got warp ritual off. Carnifex flanked around to the far right, sticking behind terrain.
Went all in with Warriors with bioweapon bond, swarm leader re-rolls and paid 2CP for single-minded annulation taking the hellblasters down to 2 remaining (1 on 1 wound).
In turn 2, warriors got some heat from hellblasters and intercessors killing the 1 wound warrior and taking another down a wound - few more termagants taken out.
On my turn, I advanced (and got a good roll) the Warriors up the middle of the board - onslaught successfully cast on them. Shot at the right-hand side intercessors with deathspitters and fleshborers killing two of them. Charged the centre squad with the warriors and took out two of their number in return the sergeant did some good work with his power sword killing one warrior and bringing another down to 1 wound.
In his turn he shot more termagants, charged his chaplain into the left squad of Termagants and charge his intercessors not in combat into the warriors.
Chaplain nearly wiped the Termagants but 3 remained - the intercessors that charged (+ power sword) managed to kill the another warrior (bringing the squad to 2) but the lashwhip came in clutch allowing me to do enough damage back that he had 3 remaining on the point.
In my turn, I used the Hive Mind imperative strat to make the warriors count as double-obsec and secure the objective which I was quite proud to remember Overkill - I left the warriors in combat but charged one of the sergeants annihilating him with a huge amount of damage! - Consolidated towards the middle.
Dark Angels - pretty much game over but chaplain managed to charge the Carnifex, caused 6 wounds (one saved FnP) and in return I rolled hot and managed (with muderous size) to cause 12 wounds in return going straight through with their AP -4, 4 damage! Even with his relic for 6 wounds and 6+ FnP, it was ample to ensure he was wiped in one turn.
Talked through the remaining rounds and scores were as follows:
Tyranids - Primary 45, Mission 15, Strangehold 15, Warp Ritual 12, 10 for painted = 97
Dark Angels - Primary 5, 10 for painted = 15
Great fun had by all - will definitely be good back in the future
