So I finally got myself into a 'slow grow' league locally - first game coming up on Thursday - which is 500pts initially and will be growing by 500pts/month.
This is my first time playing the game for real outside of playing with a friend and could do with some help!
It's a 'beginners' style format so don't need anything too competitive, just more a plan to run with including what secondaries to choose.
Round one is using the Incursion 'Resupply' mission.
I think I'm going to take the mission secondary and warp ritual but struggling with the 3rd
I only want to take fully painted models and no proxies (I know this will hamstring me a bit but I'm in it for the look and the experience mainly).
Here's what I've got to choose from:
- 30 Temagants with Fleshborers
- 12 Termgants with Devourers
- 15 Genestealers
- 1 Broodlord
- 1 Neurothrope
- 4 Zoanthropes
- 1 Tervigon with massive scything talons
- 3 ripper swarm bases
- 1 Tyranid Prime with Deathspitter, Boneswords (or Bonesword / lashwhip - magnetised)
- 6 Tyranid Warriors with Deathspitters (2 with Venom Cannons), Boneswords (or Bonesword / lashwhip - magnetised)
- 2 Carnifexes (one with dual monstrous scything talons, 1 with HVC, deathspitters and enchanced senses)
I've spent a load of time painting warriors and termgants recently so keen to take these - I've come up with 5 lists so far as follows:
List 1: Two Neurothropes, good warrior shooting
++ Battalion Detachment 0CP (Tyranids) [25 PL, 1CP, 499pts] ++
+ Configuration [3CP] +
Battle Size [3CP]: 1. Combat Patrol (0-50 Total PL / 0-500 Points) [3CP]
Detachment Command Cost
Hive Fleet: Leviathan
+ Stratagems [-1CP] +
Bounty of the Hive Fleet [-1CP]: 1 Extra Bio-artefact [-1CP]
+ HQ [10 PL, -1CP, 190pts] +
Neurothrope [5 PL, -1CP, 95pts]: Claws and Teeth, Power: Onslaught, Power: Smite, Relic: Resonance Barb, Stratagem: Alpha Leader-Beast [-1CP], Warlord, Warlord Trait: Swarm Leader
Neurothrope [5 PL, 95pts]: Claws and Teeth, Power: Catalyst, Power: Psychic Scream, Power: Smite, Relic: The Void Crown
+ Troops [15 PL, 309pts] +
Termagants [3 PL, 60pts]
. 5x Termagant (Devourer) [35pts]: 5x Devourer [10pts]
. 5x Termagant (Fleshborer) [25pts]: 5x Fleshborer
Termagants [3 PL, 60pts]
. 5x Termagant (Devourer) [35pts]: 5x Devourer [10pts]
. 5x Termagant (Fleshborer) [25pts]: 5x Fleshborer
Tyranid Warriors [9 PL, 189pts]: Synaptic Link: Bioweapon Bond [1 PL, 15pts]
. Adaptive Physiology: Enhanced Resistance
. Tyranid Warrior [26pts]: Deathspitter [6pts], Lash Whip and Bonesword [3pts]
. Tyranid Warrior [26pts]: Deathspitter [6pts], Lash Whip and Bonesword [3pts]
. Tyranid Warrior [26pts]: Deathspitter [6pts], Lash Whip and Bonesword [3pts]
. Tyranid Warrior [26pts]: Deathspitter [6pts], Lash Whip and Bonesword [3pts]
. Tyranid Warrior (Bio-cannon) [35pts]: Boneswords [3pts], Venom Cannon [15pts]
. Tyranid Warrior (Bio-cannon) [35pts]: Boneswords [3pts], Venom Cannon [15pts]
++ Total: [25 PL, 1CP, 499pts] ++
Notes: probably the most balanced list - good amount of psychic for 500 points. Warrior don't have any additional buffs outside of enhanced resistance (and catalyst) but have bio weapon bond to cast on themselves.
List 2: Tyranid Prime + Broadlord - All-in on Warrior Buffs
++ Battalion Detachment 0CP (Tyranids) [26 PL, 1CP, 500pts] ++
+ Configuration [3CP] +
Battle Size [3CP]: 1. Combat Patrol (0-50 Total PL / 0-500 Points) [3CP]
Detachment Command Cost
Hive Fleet: Leviathan
+ Stratagems [-1CP] +
Bounty of the Hive Fleet [-1CP]: 1 Extra Bio-artefact [-1CP]
+ HQ [13 PL, -1CP, 234pts] +
Broodlord [8 PL, -1CP, 140pts]: Monstrous Rending Claws, Power: Onslaught, Power: Smite, Relic: Resonance Barb, Stratagem: Alpha Leader-Beast [-1CP], Synaptic Link: Mastery of the Shadows [1 PL, 15pts], Warlord
Tyranid Prime [5 PL, 94pts]: Adrenal Glands [5pts], Boneswords [3pts], Deathspitter [6pts], Relic: Xenogenic Acid, Toxin Sacs [5pts]
+ Troops [13 PL, 266pts] +
Ripper Swarms [2 PL, 36pts]
. 3x Ripper Swarm [36pts]: 3x Claws and Teeth
Termagants [3 PL, 50pts]
. 10x Termagant (Fleshborer) [50pts]: 10x Fleshborer
Tyranid Warriors [8 PL, 180pts]: Adrenal Glands [6pts]
. Adaptive Physiology: Enhanced Resistance
. Tyranid Warrior [26pts]: Deathspitter [6pts], Lash Whip and Bonesword [3pts]
. Tyranid Warrior [26pts]: Deathspitter [6pts], Lash Whip and Bonesword [3pts]
. Tyranid Warrior [26pts]: Deathspitter [6pts], Lash Whip and Bonesword [3pts]
. Tyranid Warrior [26pts]: Deathspitter [6pts], Lash Whip and Bonesword [3pts]
. Tyranid Warrior (Bio-cannon) [35pts]: Boneswords [3pts], Venom Cannon [15pts]
. Tyranid Warrior (Bio-cannon) [35pts]: Boneswords [3pts], Venom Cannon [15pts]
++ Total: [26 PL, 1CP, 500pts] ++
Notes: all-in on the Warriors - Prime gives hit buffs and Broodlord gives dense, heavy and light cover benefits to warriors. Lack of any decent-size / durable objective holding, Prime being super costly for a 500pt game and no starting CP are concerns....
List 3: Tervigon / un-movable Termagant blob
++ Patrol Detachment 0CP (Tyranids) [28 PL, , 500pts] ++
+ Configuration [3CP] +
Battle Size [3CP]: 1. Combat Patrol (0-50 Total PL / 0-500 Points) [3CP]
Detachment Command Cost
Hive Fleet: Leviathan
+ Stratagems [-2CP] +
Bounty of the Hive Fleet [-1CP]: 1 Extra Bio-artefact [-1CP]
Progeny of the Hive [-1CP]
+ HQ [19 PL, -1CP, 330pts] +
Broodlord [8 PL, 140pts]: Monstrous Rending Claws, Power: Onslaught, Relic: Resonance Barb, Synaptic Link: Mastery of the Shadows [1 PL, 15pts]
Tervigon [11 PL, -1CP, 190pts]: Massive Scything Talons [10pts], Power: Catalyst, Power: Smite, Relic: Biomorphic Carapace, Stinger Salvo, Stratagem: Alpha Leader-Beast [-1CP], Warlord, Warlord Trait: Swarm Leader
. Adaptive Physiology: Dermic Symbiosis
+ Troops [9 PL, 170pts] +
Termagants [9 PL, 170pts]
. Adaptive Physiology: Enhanced Resistance
. 10x Termagant (Devourer) [70pts]: 10x Devourer [20pts]
. 20x Termagant (Fleshborer) [100pts]: 20x Fleshborer
++ Total: [28 PL, 500pts] ++
Notes: this is a a very skewed list designed to make a big 30 termagant blob unmovable - broodlord giving 5+ ignore AP -1/-2, -1 to hit and 5+++ fnp and then 10 are respawned every turn I'm thinking would be very hard for most armies to shift at 500pts? The Tervigon is buffed with -1 to wound biomorpic carapace relic and hopefully pretty tough to take down in most cases. The broodlord has constant 'look out sir' protection and used to counter charge is the blob gets tagged. Plenty of fleshborers to use the exploding 5/6's strat or MW strat. Heavy cover enables overwatch hits on 5+. Tervigon grants re-rolls to hit.
This list would use 'To the last' secondary. No starting CP and shutting down all the firepower if tagged (and if no CP to overwatch) are concerns as well as the practicality of moving the blob around.
List 4: 'Horde' - lots of Termagants, good warrior shooting, CP available
++ Patrol Detachment 0CP (Tyranids) [26 PL, 2CP, 500pts] ++
+ Configuration [3CP] +
Battle Size [3CP]: 1. Combat Patrol (0-50 Total PL / 0-500 Points) [3CP]
Detachment Command Cost
Hive Fleet: Leviathan
+ HQ [5 PL, -1CP, 95pts] +
Neurothrope [5 PL, -1CP, 95pts]: Claws and Teeth, Power: Catalyst, Power: Onslaught, Power: Smite, Relic: The Void Crown, Stratagem: Alpha Leader-Beast [-1CP], Warlord, Warlord Trait: Swarm Leader
+ Troops [21 PL, 405pts] +
Termagants [6 PL, 105pts]
. 5x Termagant (Devourer) [35pts]: 5x Devourer [10pts]
. 14x Termagant (Fleshborer) [70pts]: 14x Fleshborer
Termagants [6 PL, 105pts]
. 5x Termagant (Devourer) [35pts]: 5x Devourer [10pts]
. 14x Termagant (Fleshborer) [70pts]: 14x Fleshborer
Tyranid Warriors [9 PL, 195pts]: Adrenal Glands [6pts], Synaptic Link: Bioweapon Bond [1 PL, 15pts]
. Adaptive Physiology: Enhanced Resistance
. Tyranid Warrior [26pts]: Deathspitter [6pts], Lash Whip and Bonesword [3pts]
. Tyranid Warrior [26pts]: Deathspitter [6pts], Lash Whip and Bonesword [3pts]
. Tyranid Warrior [26pts]: Deathspitter [6pts], Lash Whip and Bonesword [3pts]
. Tyranid Warrior [26pts]: Deathspitter [6pts], Lash Whip and Bonesword [3pts]
. Tyranid Warrior (Bio-cannon) [35pts]: Boneswords [3pts], Venom Cannon [15pts]
. Tyranid Warrior (Bio-cannon) [35pts]: Boneswords [3pts], Venom Cannon [15pts]
++ Total: [26 PL, 2CP, 500pts] ++
Notes: I'm thinking this list is quite 'easy to drive' and has CP available. Warriors shoot well but have no defensive buffs outside of catalyst, however, there was enough pts for adrenal glands and neuro can cast onslaught to make best use of advance + charge and no compromise shooting. Plenty of Temagants here (38 in two squads) but worried they are going to be a prime target for blast weapons.
List 5: Non-respawning tough Termagant blob frontline / rippers sit on backline objective
++ Patrol Detachment 0CP (Tyranids) [27 PL, 1CP, 500pts] ++
+ Configuration [3CP] +
Battle Size [3CP]: 1. Combat Patrol (0-50 Total PL / 0-500 Points) [3CP]
Detachment Command Cost
Hive Fleet: Leviathan
+ Stratagems [-1CP] +
Progeny of the Hive [-1CP]
+ HQ [8 PL, -1CP, 140pts] +
Broodlord [8 PL, -1CP, 140pts]: Monstrous Rending Claws, Power: Catalyst, Power: Smite, Relic: Resonance Barb, Stratagem: Alpha Leader-Beast [-1CP], Synaptic Link: Mastery of the Shadows [1 PL, 15pts], Warlord, Warlord Trait: Swarm Leader
+ Troops [19 PL, 360pts] +
Ripper Swarms [2 PL, 36pts]
. 3x Ripper Swarm [36pts]: 3x Claws and Teeth
Termagants [9 PL, 150pts]
. Adaptive Physiology: Enhanced Resistance
. 30x Termagant (Fleshborer) [150pts]: 30x Fleshborer
Tyranid Warriors [8 PL, 174pts]
. Adaptive Physiology: Enhanced Resistance
. Tyranid Warrior [26pts]: Deathspitter [6pts], Lash Whip and Bonesword [3pts]
. Tyranid Warrior [26pts]: Deathspitter [6pts], Lash Whip and Bonesword [3pts]
. Tyranid Warrior [26pts]: Deathspitter [6pts], Lash Whip and Bonesword [3pts]
. Tyranid Warrior [26pts]: Deathspitter [6pts], Lash Whip and Bonesword [3pts]
. Tyranid Warrior (Bio-cannon) [35pts]: Boneswords [3pts], Venom Cannon [15pts]
. Tyranid Warrior (Bio-cannon) [35pts]: Boneswords [3pts], Venom Cannon [15pts]
++ Total: [27 PL, 1CP, 500pts] ++
Notes: a variation on the Tervigon list - drops the tervigon in favour of non-buffed warriors. Broadlords same tricks keeps the Termagants alive longer, rippers sit on a backfield objective.
All thoughts / ideas opinions welcome - honestly not too bothered doing that well but still want to give it my best shot and do the Tyranid Hive proud!
Many thanks in advance!
