Im new, Im excited but iv only got "500 points"!?!?!?!

How do i make an effective horde army when iv only got 500 points?

Im going to be fighting various foes in time, including:


the Sisters of battle.

Adeptus Mechanicus.

ORKS!!!!.


How do i make an impact? help?

A little bit more info would be nice to help out
Eg. Are you expecting to stay and play at 500p?
Or are you aiming for a horse army at a higher bracket? (ie 1500, 2000p etc)

Typical horde armies tend to lean heavily into hormies for rushing up the board. Or termies for just staying.

I find genestealers and broodlord a nice "horde" list for 500p though. Very thematic

The good thing about 500 points is that your opponents will not be able to fancy walkers or tanks without investing over a third of the army. Whichs means you dont have to do the same to compete.

The bad this is that our hordes are considerably worse than what you stated you would be up against. Tons of sisters infantry are gonna just gun you off the board. I cannot speak for ad mech but I assume the same. And Orks will clobber you in melee.

Genestealers would do well if they aren't shot to pieces. Perhaps a bare bones distraction fex. Maybe some small warrior squads with a Prime? Could probably make an argument for Venomthropes at this level too.

Seriously though, Genestealers are decent. 3x16 and a BL makes a formidable foe rn.

Yeah i agree, after looking into our next meal...I mean looking up the statistics on various other factions armies, seeing that i agree.
i think for 500 points i wont have to worry about huge problems as much.
but still as a total noob i will most likely be blown to bits, but if i can get a few larger distractions in and some formidable Genestealers to get in close
i could make an impact.

so what would you all take for 500 points?

my very first ideas were as follows:

A hive tyrent 165 points for 1
Gene stealers 65 points for 5 or more with extra
Tyranid warriors 51 points for 3
Venomthropes 99 points for 3
Gargoyles 70 points for 10
Biovore 50 points for 1

Still though i am a Noob... What would my brood brothers bring?

A horde army like the one you want at 500 points is either 30 devgants or 15 genestealers because you simply cannot kill with hormagaunts and at 500pts every unit should be valuable. Pick your poison and then a HT or a BL and most of your points are already gone. Add a min warrior unit for synaptic and now you really don't have any more units that you can take.

Take:

Tyranid Prime: Deathspitters, Bonesword, Link. WLT from Leviathan to reroll all hits.
6 Warriors: Deathspitters, LWBS, 2 Cannons
30 Hormagants

Should max your 500pts just like that.

You can send the Hormagants up with exploding hits srrategem and 6s auto wound, this will already be killer. More cp to give hormagants -1ap. You'll drown the target in saves, even if it's a Dreadnought or something.

Warriors just shoot and get into combat once the Hormagants die.

If you want to run a hoard then just bring gaunts. You should be able to get around 50 devilgaunts and a broodlord for 500 points.

You’re going to want devilgaunts over termagants because the extra range will help you while you learn how to maneuver your units and get used to the large footprint of the unit.

You’re going to take the broodlord to counter charge any unit that assaults your gaunts. Hide him between your gaunts to protect him as well as providing synapse for as many units as possible.

This army isn’t going to do well against most vehicles, but at 500 points you shouldn’t be seeing many vehicles.

Well, 500pts is a neurothrope and 80 termagants. So that's a horde army.

But agree on the above, horde will be expensive to start with, but devilgaunts would be better. I'd run Neurothrope, 2x20 devilgaunts, then 2x10 termagants for objectives.

Better yet, BL w/ Link and Swarm Leader, 2x20 DevGants w/ ER, and 3 Warriors w/ Link. Shoots opposing scoring off the table, and is very difficult to remove the Gants stacking the BL Link and Catalyst (5+/5+++ vs all high volume fire). Void Crown is very efficient on BL as well since it doesn’t lose any casts.

My choice would be kaze's list, it has a nice mixture of shooting and melee. While the OP asked for horde style he may not have wanted to go all in on gant carpet. I think it's not a great choice for starting out, lots to build and paint and it can be less interactive to play.
