First the pix, then the report
Not sure this is a legit Games Workshop model. And I don’t recall Ultramarines having access to ‘Giant Furfiend. Melee weapon: claws. Range weapon: Adorable cuteness’
Especially when it can rampage into terrain. Maybe it’s a Forge World kitteh
Another Fur Fiend of Ultramar being kept in strategic reserve.
A battalion of Hive Fleet Leviathan with a patrol of Hive Fleet Kronos face off against the Sons of Guilliman. The Emperor Protects
The swarm, ravenous for fresh biomass focus their gaze across the landscape, the will of the Hive Mind flowing across their numbers.
Zoanthropes, feeding their synaptic channeling to a Neurothrope to their right, ensuring it can apply Symbiostorm to the Hive Guard as they remain securely ensconced in obscuring terrain while an Exocrine digs in and together with another distant Exorcine concentrate their fire on the Inceptor Squad that could well threaten the hidden Hive Guard. The monstrous cannon cause appalling loss of life before they can get into the air.
A unit of Termgaunts reach some piping just as the marines reach a similar position across the board, but where the marines dig in, the Termagaunts cannot resist and rush forth. The frenzied dash across no man’s land resulted in their utter destruction to brutal barrages of Bolter fire.
Under the Swarmlords influence, Hormagaunts thunder across the filed of battle as the Marines take positions and prepare to give no quarter against the xenos scum as they take withering barrages of fire from the Tyranid Warriors lurking in the back.
The two exocrine that caused so much carnage are finally brought down, and as the Space Marine lines begin to crumble from the relentless and brutal impaler cannon deluges, the Swarmlord charges into the fray. It is quickly surrounded by elite Space Marine Warriors and Commanders who bring their full wrath to bear but as it falls, it is Animated by the Hive Mind. Spurred into a final berserker attack that results in significant trauma, these death throes bring havoc and a bittersweet victory for the Ultramarines, who soon after come to the grim realization that their is to be no escaping this place and all that remains is to sell their lives as dearly as possible.
Okay written bit...
Battle report #1: Being so new to the game, we decided to just go all out war, learn what our dudes can do, their speed, stratagems and abilities, no mission, no secondary, just run around and kill.
Tyranid List
Battalion of Leviathan
Warlord: Prime with Adaptive Neural Lobe, Unchecked Ferocity, Swarm Leader
9 x Warriors, Synaptic Link, Deathspitters, Boneswords, three Venom Cannon
Swarmlord with Void Crown, 30 x Hormagaunts, 23 Termagaunts (17xDevourer, 6xFleshborer)
4 x Zoanthropes, 3 x Rippers, 2 x Lictors
Patrol of Kronos
Neurothrope with Resonance Barb for symbiostorm
2 x Exocrine, 6 x Hive Guard, 10xTermagaunts
Ultramarine List (Primaris)
I dunno, loadsa dudes in power armour and some weird looking ones in the back, but I could foresee his flying lads quickly deducing the Hive Guard needed to go and levied all my barrages at them, leaving one guy standing. Gaunts rushed in, taking heavy loses but getting deep into enemy territory to tie up the edges of the board nicely. They weren’t killing anything, but everything they engaged was going nowhere as the Impalers continued to rain down on their comrades.
He finally managed to bring down the two Exorcine after they had done spectacular damage (although my first ever roll in 40K was for an Exocrine and it was 5x1’s and a 2 - hate my luck, love that Kronos reroll).
With the edges of the board taken, it was going to be a looooong run to reach the main force with all the commanders and psykers in the center and it would be through hails of weapon fire.
To buy time, I sent in Swarmie, he charged, did some damage, they surrounded him and cut him down, but Animated By The Hive Mind crippled or killed almost everyone (fortunately for the Marines, his Captain had just that fallen back and was out of the death bubble).
Gravely depleted he faced 9 warriors with Prime, two pockets of stragglers of gaunts as chaf, and 4 Zoanthropes and a Neurothrope on their way.
They might have been able to do something, but all the while, those impalers with symbiostorm and +1 to hit from the warriors (and I had the CP to start using Single Minded Annihilation) were going to be raining down. The Primaris called it, promising vengeance against the xenos scum.
Couldn't have asked for a more exhilarating, entertaining and awesome intro to the game.
Met new people, had fun, learned lots, and played with kittehz and bugs. Next time we'll play missions.
