I don’t know the basics, PLEASE HELP ME

Hello I’m HWAQ!
I made this thread because I am a beginner and i don’t know how the game works and the basics like stats. I have seen experts and I want to learn the rules so bad so I can play the game.

I also have seen people with higher ranks. I have seen tyrants and norn queens, so how do I become more then a small sad ripper.
Please teach me.

The rank is just a function of how many posts you have made on this forum. It doesn't mean anything substantial. The highest ranks are for moderators only.

As for learning the game, your best bet for the absolute basics is probably to go to your nearest GW or local game store and find the people playing Warhammer 40k in the back. Ask them if they can show you the ropes because you will learn far faster by doing it than by reading text from random people online trying to explain ALL THE RULES.

Once you understand the basics enough to have specific questions, the Hive is an EXTRMELY good place to ask those questions. I have been on several 40k forums over the years, but the analysis I see here is far more detail oriented than most.

Yeah, they are. But you will need them to be able to play. If you have friends who don't really care about expensive plastic, you can play with coke cans and cheap army men, but you will need the rules because the game is complicated enough that you will never just memorize everything perfectly. You will always need to go back to the original printed rules to make sure you are remembering them right.

Agreed that a local game store is the best bet for learning. Most people there are happy to teach.

For some basic knowledge, I googled and there are numerous learn to play videos out there. I linked one below

Additionally, you can download the core rules from GWs website. This will go over how the game is played and how to read unit stats.

For unit stats/list building, battle scribe is good. I'd strongly recommend getting a codex or borrowing one from a friend to familiarize yourself with it.

If cost is a factor, I might recommend playing kill team you need less models, so it's much cheaper to play.

The rules can be expensive, but there are work arounds. First off, the core rules are free. You can download them here:

These aren’t all the rules you need to play. I don’t think list building and missions are included in the free rules. This is enough to learn how to play the game. Hopefully someone in your gaming group has access to a rule book so that you can look at what you’re missing.


Another thing you can look at is the Warhammer app. It’s five or six bucks a month and gives you access to all the rules. They offer a free trial, so I’d check it out and see if you like it. There are other apps out there that give unit rules and act as an army builder, but I’d start with the GW one.


After you’ve read the rules, if you have a specific question then we’d be happy to explain it to you. Unfortunately most of us do not have the time to write the book that it would take to go over everything.
