Starting out with Tyranids. Need suggestions.

I've been looking to build a tyranid list at 1k points for some casual games with friends. I am a new player and the idea of the tyranids seems really cool to me. All I need is a list. I don't really know what to look for but suggestions are needed!

Best advise for casual games - pick up the codex, look at what's neat and cool and you like the look of. Buy it, build it, paint it, play it.

The Tyranid Codex is at a point where our internal balance is near the best it's been in nearly 20 years - for casual games where people are building starting collections, many options work or have ways to make it work. Just find the stuff that speaks to you or gets you into it, then build it up.

For some really generic stuff though:

You'd probably want the Get Started set with a BL, 8 Genestealers, a Trygon/Trygon Prime. It's a decent value set, and BL/Genestealers are and will remain great supposedly. Trygon is a little hit or miss, but can be made to work.

Following that, you'll probably want at least 6 HG, which there are no sets to leverage off of.

Round your Genestealers to 16 at least, 40 preferably.

Get a Hive Tyrant box - it's good value again, and gives you options for a Swarmlord, which enables all our movement and melee builds, or a Hive Tyrant (with wings), which is a generalist that does stuff in all phases.

Outside of that, it's get a codex first, read it.

Make sure whatever you choose actualy makes a detachement, this is required to play most games. Dont be like my girlfriend and buy 6 flyer as starting point.
