Rate my list (should I warn my opponent?)

Took the list at the bottom to a 2k game, I go first and he calls it at the end of my first shooting phase.

He was playing ultra marines and deployed aggressively with 2 invictors, 2x5 infiltrators and his 6 (I think) blade guard up front and chose not to redeploy.

I rolled well with the hive guard getting 6 6s for extra hits, between double shooting, exo, tfex I had cleared 1 invictor, 5 infiltrators and all the blade guard.

By the end of my turn with combat I would have wiped the 2nd invictor with swarmy and the 5 infiltrators with the stealers.

On his part, I think he made some mistakes, he perhaps should have redeployed the invictors and moved the blade guard back a little (I was only just in range with the hive guard)

I've never played him before and we didn't discuss how competitive a game we wanted.

I feel bad he wouldn't have enjoyed it and that I should have checked before hand.

I haven't got into tournaments yet so don't know where this list sits on the competitive scale. Is this a list I should warn people about in advance?

List seems a good blend of competitive and casual, taking a second hive fleet with the melee things would make it tougher. As long as you aren’t using FW models, a Tyranid list will never be an ultra competitive list.

I think you’re opponent was mostly to blame, as it seems like they were gambling on winning first turn and trying to cripple you with an all or nothing play. Something that your opponent just has to learn, and I have a friend I play against who used to make the same mistake. His redemptor and Invictor never did anything when he lost the roll until he started deploying back and playing for smart T2/3 plays instead of trying to force risky T1 plays.

Thanks. I thinks it's a tough list but certainly not top tier and think it's a "fair" pick up game list.

How much terrain was present? That can make a big difference in terms of swings for who wins if they go first.

Good terrain, obscuring L in each quarter, some smaller obscuring mid board and some dense scattered around. However he aggressively deployed in Los of exo and tfex. Hive guard laugh at terrain.

You don't need to warn an opponent but it is good games man ship to talk through your army, even explain ranges and ask if they have any questions. So to should your opponent.
Avoiding 'gotcha' moments is sporting. In an uncompetitive environment like a pick up game I find I get more out of it if I state my intentions and help my opponent to have a good game, I do this in tournaments too but the helping your opponent isn't 'normal' in a tournament! 

Nids struggle competitively in tournaments, your list isn't as strong as a Nid list can get but does have some of the key units and the Kronos shooting buffs.

Marines are a good match up for Nids.

Try your list into AdMech, Dark Eldar, and Sisters for a feel of what you would meet in a tournament in terms of new books. 
Try your list into Eldar/Quinns and Imp knights to get a feel of tough match ups from old books.

Next time try and briefly coach your opponent through how you would deploy the opponents army against your own army before deployment. If they don’t want to do that, some strong hinting with “Are you sure you want that in LoS of unit X, it’s dead if you lose the roll off” can help even stubborn people. I appreciate the latter from my usual opponents. Just make sure you don’t press and try to play the game for them, and the atmosphere should stay fun.

Good advice. I always try to call out any gotchas and forgot to mention that stealers can advance and charge, didnt make a difference in the end.

I did question and suggestion he redeploys once I won roll off.

We did speak about what to do differently but he was adamant nothing would make a difference and hive guard are op and he couldn't counter them.

I mean just sitting back with the Invictors and clearing off your units from midfield objectives would have made the HG mostly useless, so the opponent had options to counter. Most opponents can fairly easily force Kronos forward, which is why the hive fleet isn’t terribly competitive solo. Maybe in the future just ask if HG are okay to bring I guess. For this opponent, suggest trying out a land speeder or two, they cause my HG headaches.

Is your opponent a friend or someone you know outside of the 40k scene? If not, he doesn't sound like someone I would seek out to get another game. I don't consider hive guard broken: it sounds like you got really lucky and he took that for average rolls.

Another suggestion is if you have the time and the game ends quickly due to one opponent going first is to reset up and play again with the other person going first.
