So. You've been deployed to fight Tyranids. This guide's advice will hopefully get you in and out in one mostly alive piece.
Chapter One: Types of Tyranids
Tyranids come in many types, all of which have various methods of inflicting death and destruction. Here's a basic rundown.
Termagants
Dog sized goat-bugs. Usually have a single rifle-equivalent weapon. Some have spinefists, which are basically pistols.
Termagants are usually deployed in huge masses to soften up enemy fire. Use area of effect weapons to kill them more efficiently.
Hormagants
Termagants, but with sharp claws instead of organic guns.
Ripper Swarms
Small worms with lots of really, really sharp teeth. Again, area of effect weapons. They burrow, too.
Gargoyles
Big bat-bug things that fly. Spit venom at you, and use organic rifles. Shoot them before they pounce. Really fast too, cause they're speedy.
Harpies
Flying death cannons. Again, shoot it as soon as it comes within range.
Tyranid Warriors
Big nasty things with thick armor. Some have claws, some have swords, some have rifles or pistols, some have big cannons. All of them have four arms, each pair boasting an array of terrifying weaponry. Try not to confront up close. If you have to, use swords, not axes or mauls to pierce the plates. Rifles are better than shotguns, but shotguns are still better than melee.
Raveners
Big snakes with three sets of sharp claws. Surprisingly fast and agile. Prioritize over lesser warforms if possible, but synaptic leaders take priority.
Trygon
Raveners, but much bigger and doesn't desync. Shoot first.
Hive Tyrants
If one appears, shoot it shoot it shoot it. Like Tyranid Warriors, they have four arms with a variable array of things to kill you with attached. Even more terrifying is the fact that some have wings. Use armor-piercing weaponry. Rockets are great. When they die, the lesser Tyranids get desynced and turn feral. Unless there's a Broodlord or Tervigon, of course, but if you kill it you've still made tremendous progress.
Tervigons
Giant tanks with practically invincible armor. It practically takes an artillery strike to kill them, so you should be focusing on the Termagants it produces unless you happen to have a machine gun. Like Hive Tyrants, lesser Tyranids get desynced when it dies.
