What is the current meta?

So I've been looking into different kinds of armies, horde, nidzilla and mixed. I'm not sure which is better honestly. Looking to get more models as I've only just started collecting nids but want to know what the meta is so I can finally beat my friends.

Currently I have a Swarmlord, 12 Termagants, A Trygon/Mawloc, a Broodlord and 8 Genestealers. I'm wanting to get enough models to make a 1500-2000P list but don't know what to go for, big models or horde models. Also any advice on how I should play either horde or nidzilla would be helpful.

Honestly, if you're looking for meta in nids, I'm leaning towards the wrong faction answer personally. It's always fun, but I dun think we're ever considered a meta army, especially without buying into forgeworld.

Anyways, it seems a combination of nidzilla and shooting were the top nids army in the last few ITC articles.

A couple lists had 2 dimachaerons and some Hive guard and exocrine shooting; and another list was a harridan and shooting list.
Both lists featured primarily expensive forgeworld models and I'm fairly certain the list owners are very very versed in 40k, allowing them to make the best of the lists too.

But a unit of 6 hive guards, 1-2 exocrine and swarm lord seem to be the backbone of almost every list so far. Then you can build various tactics around them. Hope that helps!

I see, thanks I'll be sure to look into it. I understand nids aren't particularly strong right now but was just curious as to what is the strongest way to play with them haha. Thanks for the help tho I'll look into getting some hive guard and exocrines.

Feel like I should elaborate a little, just in case you're not familiar.
A kronos patrol for the hive guards and exocrine for the reroll 1s and access to symbiostorm (blood of Baal expansion) is the shooting element i was talking about.

The question is somewhat loaded, since it differs if you run FW or not. FW lists are where the mixed lists shine, and non-FW are usually better skewing into Nidzilla or horde. Meta is also HIGHLY dependent on what armies you play against, so the answers may not be accurate w/o knowledge of what armies you are looking to beat. Whatever you do, a Kronos Patrol adds a ton of value to a Battalion consisting of one of the three options. Essentially play what you like + Kronos Patrol, and most matches will probably be decided by decisions/dice instead of army composition. For example, I see better than 50/50 success with a psychic heavy Leviathan horde Battalion + Kronos Patrol, but I mainly play SM armies.

I'm currently using a 3k comp nid army for a tournament next month that does really well. Exactly right with the backbone of exocrines and hive guard. For tyranids if you're not running them you're going to have a hard game.

Swarm lord is a must. a lot of people recommend using him to slingshot genestealers which is a great tactic if you can pull it off, but for points value I find the genestealers struggle to kill their value and usually get massacred, personally I've had more success with swarms of hormagants. Neurothropes are awesome objective holders, their inv saves make them very tough nuts to crack and they generally rack up their points value flinging out smites.
