Contrast paints with other primer

Has anyone tried using contrast paints with regular light primer?

I tried orange contrast with light grey airbrush primer from Vallejo and the results were okay.

Is there a significant difference in effect of using the contrast specific primers versus a regular light coloured primer or light coloured base coat?

I have used flesh tearer red over corax spray and the result was pretty nice, I think. The surface definitely changes how it acts for application, being more even and less contrast

Yeah other primers work fine.
I've had issues on some models where my primer coverage hasn't been good, causing the contrast paint has run away from some areas of the model like water from oil. But that was more a matter of making sure to spray the model from all angles, rather than of the type of primer used (I hadn't sprayed the model from underneath).

The main difference I've found in the contrast primers is that they go on much smoother than most light coloured primers. Without that chalkyness that you often get.
They are expensive, but I do like the quality.

Thanks for the info, I'll stick with non contrast primer then and experiment with matt varnishes on top.
