So for the first time in what feels like forever I am bringing my nids out to play. I am hoping to get more games in person now as my vaccine is in full effect. In addition for me it is a big day as I finally finished my 3 toxicrenes which I hope to be the core of my army. It has been a lot of work and I am happy to finally see them take the field. I was going to have the bases finished but my brother came over for a visit and painting bases took a back seat.
The Lists:
Of note this was a take all my dudes style list for me and I asked my opponent to take all the tough stuff his list was seeing good success with. I was excited to play against the 9th edition Necron hotness.
Tyranids
Custom Hive Fleet: +1 to hit for monsters and synapse re-roll
Swarmlord
Hive Tyrant - Monstrous Rending Claws, Heavy Venom Cannon (Relic), Adrenal Glands
Hive Tyrant - 2x Monstrous Rending Claws, Adrenal Glands
Hive Tyrant - Wings, Monstrous Rending Claws, Heavy Venom Cannon (Relic), Adrenal Glands
Broodlord - +1 to cast relic
3 x 3 Ripper Swarm
3 x Toxicrene
Maleceptor
Exocrine
Mawloc
Trygon - Adrenal Glands
2 x Carnifex - 2 x Scything Talons
Exocrine
Tyrannofex - Acid Spray
Secondaries - Engage, Kill Characters, While we stand we fight
Necrons
Dynasty - Obsec and move 6" (Not entirely sure if it was his dynasty or something else)
Silent King
Nightbringer
Lord - Relic res orb
2 Cryptecs - One has veil of darkness
2 x 20 Warriors
5 x Scarabs
2 x Reanimators
6 x Skorphek Destroyers
10 x Lychguard
5 x Praetorians
Secondaries: Kill Monsters, Necron specific not sure on 3rd
Pregame Thoughts:
I need to put in body blows into the Ctan before he engages. Otherwise I will need to be ready to bring up the mawloc, smite, shoot and fight him or he would be a big problem for me. I can put a lot of hurt on the silent king who is really his only ranged anti-tank but I know the king will be well hidden so it will be tricky. I am very concerned about that res orb and my ability to kill these warrior blobs. Mortal wounds are good but my smites get progressively harder to cast so... maybe it's enough?
Deployment:
We get the short table edge deployment. Note all flanks are from the nid perspective.
On the nids right flank I had the rending claw tyrant, a carnifex and a toxicrene. In my center I had my exocrine and flyrant behind obscuring terrain. On my left flank was everything else 2 toxicrenes, swarmy, carnifex, tyrannofex and remaining walkrant. Rippers, Mawloc and Trygon were in deep strike
Necrons deployed scarabs, warriors witht their support and nightbringer on the right flank. Silent king, lych guard and praetorians were deployed in his center. Warriors with support, Lord and Skorphek Destroyers were on his left flank.
Of note there is one large building in the center. WE agreed monsters could not move across it but the little pillars on the side would not stop a toxicrene or something from engaging an enemy on the walkway.
I won the roll off for first turn and he moved forward 6"
Tyranids Turn 1:
I slung shot a toxicrene on the left flank towards a warrior blob. Lined up long range smites and shots while staying out of any potential turn 1 charge ranges. I do not want to give the nightbringer a free kill. All the damage saw 11 warriors, 3 skorpheck lords and 1 reanimator die. The C'tan took 3 wounds.
Necrons Turn 1:
He mostly moves forward and sends his lychguard and lord after my toxicrene. Shooting sees the right flank toxicrene die leaving that flank rather ligh. Melee sees a carnifex get butchered by the skhorpek lords and the rippers engage the rending claw hive tyrant. Lychguard wrecked the Toxicrene taking 2 mortal wounds from his blood before he blew up dealing flat 3 to the lychguard, warriors and lord. Quite the lucky swing for me.
\
End of Round Analysis:
He still has his alpha targets but I through a stroke of luck can kill the lord with a mawloc. Not what I had intended but if I can remove a res orb before it is used I certainly will take it. Good position but sloppy play needs to be avioded.
Tyranids Turn 2:
Toxicrene and maleceptor step into the center. Other tyrants sort of hide behind them on the left flank. Critically I am able to get my brood lord 18" away from the lychguard and 24" away from the silent king so I can get paroxysm off. Mawloc comes into the foot print of the toxicrene, Trygon appears to charge the silent king and a ripper unit deploys in the far right corner for engage and also to assault the silent king if the trygon makes it in. During the turn the lord dies gets up and s noodled down by a toxicrene. Left flank warriors are killed, Skorpheks are killed, Scarabs are killed and the Lychguard reduced to 3 models. The Nightbringer also took his dose of 3 wounds from the shooting phase again. The Trygon got beamed down in overwatch!
Necrons Turn 2:
We both agreed here he was in a bad way but still had some great tools. He needed to really bloody my nose to stop me from running away with it. His nightbringer and silent king step into the front. Everything else moves forward minus a reanimator and cryptec who hang back on the right flank to play ripper whackamole. Damage sees rippers reduced to 1 wound, toxicrene reduced to 3 wounds, maleceptor killed, carnifex killed and a couple of wounds off of my rending claw tyrant who is now engaged with a warrior blob. The toxicrene managed to kill a lychguard and do another mortal wound to the C'tan
End of Round Analysis:
He hit back but I still have my alpha units ready to go and I can kill that C'tan almost guaranteed and the silent king is killable. If I do that the game will essentially be in the bag. Feeling good but bad dice could hurt me.
Tyranids Turn 3:
I fall back with the Toxicrene, bring in rippers onto an objective and the back right flank for engage. Everything else lines up smites on the C'tan and a charge on the Silent King. Damage sees the C'tan reduced to dust and the Silent King brought low by 1 broodlord, 2 hive tyrants and a swarmlord along with a bunch of shooting. The silent king exploded 10" killing the toxicrene, broodlord, flyrant, a ton of damage to all my other monsters, 2 praetorians, 3 warriors and the Lychguard.
Necrons Turn 3:
Reanimator moves onto an objective and praetorians charge into an exocrine losing a member for their trouble
End of Round Analysis:
Oh man I got horrify off on the Silent king and boy it paid off! Even with the silent Kings highly effective explosion I have removed everything that can effectively hurt me while still retaining a lot of alpha units. The game is essentially over.
Tyranids Turn 4:
I run around and kill everything but a single Cryptec
Necrons Turn 4:
Cryptec teleports to the back left corner
End of Round Analysis:
This guy is not getting away
Tyranids Turn 5:
He did not get away
Final score was Nids 94 points to Necrons 54ish
Stars of the Game
1st Star - Toxicrene! - Hugging and exploding put me in a great position. Also these guys doing so well on the first match makes me happy.
2nd Star - Mawloc - A lot of mortal wounds, Killed the lord and got blasted by the silent King instead of swarmy or something.
3rd Star - Swarmlord - Flinging is very good and he is the one who did the final damage to the Silent king.
Dunce Cap - Trygon - My bad buddy. I should have taken the more guaranteed route. He did eat up 2 CP though when my opponent overwatched and re-rolled
So I got lucky in going first and having the toxicrene explode. I took full advantage of that luck and was able to have a devastating turn 3. I was very surprised I was able to chew through the warriors so quickly and shocked absolutely shocked how impactful the Mawloc was. I won't expect this result every game but with I only take X damage per phase I can see myself including one on the regular.
Oh my gosh the Toxicrenes were just wonderfully effective. I was so happy to see them do well. I was also shocked to see I was able to hold the objectives quite frequently. I thought the obsec and reanimations would just bog everything down.
Critically when my opponent saw how heavy the left flank was for his nids I think he should have deployed the scarabs there and kept his warriors back a bit rather then moving up 6" after I got the first turn. It made my toxicrene charge very easy and allowed me to smite the warriors while being able to hang back safely. That said I have a pretty skewed list due to my theme so his competitive TAC list just sort of lacked enough anti-tank to deal with 15 monsters which is certainly an excessive skew.
Really happy to see Nidzilla do so well for me. It was fun to see some of the big scary Necron models. They certainly live up to the hype as they did most of the work for his list.
