Great report, but just a note. You used Catalyst on a Ridgerunner but you can't cast Hive Fleet powers on GSC or GSC powers on Hive Fleet.

From the Tyranid FAQ:

Add the following section before ‘Abilities’:
‘Tyranids Units
In the rules described in this section we often refer to ‘Tyranids
units’. This is shorthand for any Tyranids unit that also has the
<Hive Fleet> keyword. A Tyranids Detachment is therefore one
which only includes units with both the Tyranids and <Hive
Fleet> keyword.
Note that although Genestealer Cults are devoted to the Hive
Mind and will willingly fight alongside their xenos masters, they
deviate significantly in terms of organisation and tactics, not to
mention physiology! Genestealer Cults units therefore cannot
make use of any of the rules listed in this section (this includes
the Detachment abilities, Stratagems, bio-artefacts, psychic
powers, Warlord Traits and Tactical Objectives described in this
section), and instead have their own rules.’

I don't like to go larger than 10 because of blast and I find that even just 10 is normally killing whatever they hit.

Obviously haven't gone into hard targets yet . Acos can definitely bounce off stuff, especially if you fail might.

my second lictor and spend 1 cp on pheromone trail to bring in my 30 gants. To get them all in range of his warriors I had to put some gants on the roof, but they were all within the 5" vertical coherency.

Remember you can bring up wherever in your DZ with strat reserve: you'd have to string back through the forest to board edge, which would suck, but considering you ended up in a building anyway I think it'd have ended up being similarly restrictive but not needing you to put your lictor there and be down a CP.

I then use my crouchling power to cast a second time and put might from beyond on the acolyte squad.

Minor thing, but familiar cast is end of phase.

I had forgotten they could do that, and he goes right into my acolytes. Looking at it, there was no way I could have stayed out of 3" of the immortals and also out of intervention range of the wraiths. Big mistake on my part.

I am now +1 strength and attack from the spell, so I get 12 s10

S9, you multiply then add (and yes, this applies for weapons as well).

My patriarch then has nothing to swing at. Then defender strikes first, so his scarabs get to attack my warriors. He rolls hot and kills a warrior and wounds another. I strike back with with warriors and roll a ton of 1s and 2s to hit, and in the end only kill 1 base. Then his wraiths strike at my poor acolytes and easily wipe the squad.

Again minor thing, but should've swung with acos.

Only comment on overall strategy is really disagree with pushing up with scout sents: yes you get your 2 VP for engage, but you extend a model for a charge plus possible wrap (which, on an all obsec army that you have no/one good way to shift in melee...), and you're not screening veil, letting them threaten multiple avenues/objectives. (Aside, not sure how the charge was still 9" after casualties?)

Ho boy. This' a topic that frustrates me greatly. But basically, the Keywords are still there, 'make use of' is incredibly vague and could just as well apply to using them yourself, rather than having them cast on you, and the whole 'cannot make use of any of the rules or abilities listed in this section' is also in CSM etc. You could argue that the 'rules and abilities' doesn't apply to psychic I guess, but feels like a stretch: it's definitely not cut and dried either way.

The quote specifically says 'psychic powers' in parenthesis after 'cannot make use of any of the rules listed in this section'. Seems pretty cut and dry to me.

So two things here.  First, my opponent had told me that with the canoptek strat it let his wraiths intervene 6".  The acolytes were outside of 3" but within 6".  I just went and looked up the strat online and it looks like my opponent was wrong, the strat only allows a normal HI.  This might have been a big deal to the game because it means I should have held that objective at the start of his turn.

However on the other point, I'm sure I rolled some 2s to wound on the saws against the lychguard, and I had forgotten then changed the order of multiplication/addition.  I probably would have killed less lychguard with the saws, and now I'll never know if the patriarch could have finished off the squad due to my mistake.

I'm not sure my opponent getting that one rule wrong would have changed the overall outcome given how lopsided the score was.  I'll bring it up to my opponent though.  I think this was only his 7th game with his army, so mistakes will happen.

I think you hit the nail on the head for GSC: they've really become codex acolytes for competitive gaming and therefore don't have the staying power to camp on objectives for a whole turn.

I'm hoping for a codex sooner rather than later but I'm guessing GSC will only get a codex in 2022 (probably after marines get their second 9e codex).

I feel like it has been Codex Acolytes since the loss of Purestrains pricing decent in 7th? Most expensive horde kit and only 5 models when everything is 10. Makes sense to rinse the Tyranid players for trying to buy Imperial stuff (that has now been soft phased out)

I'm a relatively new splinter fleet and started trying to devour the galaxy in 8e, so I don't have memories of 7th. I would say that the codex did ok for about the first year or so it came out in 8e. Abberants and neophytes could work, but acolytes we're more damage per point.

Acolytes are freaking expensive for how many you need. I've kitbashed up some old genestealers into acolytes (just giving them the equipment I wanted. I should probably add clothes).

I don't see how you solve GSCs problems without a redesign of the codex. You either need more durability or more horde capabilities.
