2000 Points swarm

I posted this army on another forum, but decided I might as well come to the Nid experts.

I feel like my 2,000 point army could do with a bit more kick in 9th edition and just wondering what I can do in order to do that. I don't want to do anything too drastic, nor do I plan to compete in tournaments any time soon. A more competitive army would be good though.


The army I currently use is:


1 Battalion Detachment – Hive Fleet Leviathan – 12 CP in total



1 Hive Tyrant with Wings and 2x Two Devourers with Brainleech Worms. Warlord

1 Broodlord



16 Genestealers

24 Hormagaunts

5 Termagants with Devourers, 20 with Fleshborers

2 x 3 Tyranid Warriors with 1 Venom Cannon



3 Hiveguard with Impalers

3 Zoanthropes



16 Gargoyles



2 x 1 Screamer Killers

1 Trygon Prime



1 Hive Crone


I've made a couple of changes to the army on paper and I'm wondering if I'm going in the right direction. I got rid of the Hive Crone and 1 of the Screamer Killers. With the points I added a Malanthrope, another squad of Hormagaunts and an extra Hive Guard. The new army list:

10 Termagants with Devourers, 10 with Fleshborers

3 Zoanthropes



16 Gargoyles



1 Screamer Killer
1 Trygon Prime


The idea for both armies is to get up close and personal as soon as possible. The Termagants tunnel in with the Trygon Prime and the rest of the army follows on foot / wing. The Tyranid Warriors are there to support with synapse where they can and take backfield objectives.



So, am I moving in the right direction with the second army? Are both garbage? Any tweaks (to either army) to make things better?

I've found Zoans are not worth it without being 4+ and having a Neuro nearby to help guarantee they do their one thing. Otherwise, Zoans lack of objective sec makes the durability somewhat moot. I would suggest either turning the 1x Malanthrope into 1x Neuro and 4x Zoans, or 3x Zoans into 6x Hive Guard and more Termagants w/ Devs. Since the Termagants are with the Trygon, they would be best w/ as many as possible holding Devourers. Cutting down on gargs/gaunts would help get them to 30. (though 30 sometimes has issues fitting round the Trygon base if you want to also charge)

Replacing the Malanthrope with an extra Zoanthrope and a Neurothrope sounds like a good idea, I'll do that. Even leaves me some points left over to put Adrenal Glands on the Screamer Killer. 

I see your point about more Devourers on the Termagants. I think I'll leave the second list as it is for now (along with the above change) and try it out.

Agreed with the above: you lack damage in a lot of your units to make them worth bringing. Hive guard really want to be 6 for SMA (and in Kronos, because otherwise their output is subpar), <4 zoans aren't worth bringing at all (150 pts for a single smite??), trygon prime is eh. Taking it, and taking it as a prime for anything less than a 20 blob of devilgants is again, very lacking.

Don't like melee fexes, especially a solo screamer-kill: slow and vulnerable to terrain, and even when it gets there isn't too great.

Also not sure what you're doing with adapts/relic?

All in all, feels fairly disjointed.

I'm currently using my Trigon model as a Mawloc.

I've had good experiences as long as you don't expect the same impact you would off of a Trigon.

I.e. it can be a great distraction, in as backline your opponent HAS to deal with it or it will cause havoc. Therefore it uses up their resources to either turn back units or taking some of their ranged attacks that would otherwise be directed elsewhere.

It's cheaper so more points for those devilgants

It can be placed nearer to enemy units so against a clever opponent who screens his deployment zone you can get in and clear space for other deep strike units to get objectives for you.

It can also reburrow underground when it's done some of the above, and pop up again in the next turn to take off the list pesky wounds on some annoying units that are around.

I've found the Mawloc always does more than the Trygon, it being cheaper makes it only upsides. Both die the turn they enter, but the Mawloc's MW's and the ability to auto-contest an objective have a bigger impact than a failed Trygon charge. Even if the Trygon makes combat, usually isn't with anything terribly great. Glad the Mawloc is working for you, it is definitely an often overlooked choice for this edition.

Only plus to the Trygon is the unit that accompanies it, but 1CP for reserves is a much lower cost than 155pts.
