Brutal comeback...

Due to pandemic situation I haven`t played in the last months and when I don’t play I soon loose interest in painting and reading about the game so I have hardly egen read this forum, which usally is a dailly orutinerad and my prime channel for 40K info.
Yesterday I played a game again. I took a simple list in order to get back in the game and the new rules etc. 12 hiveguards and 2 exocrine and a leviathan part with mawlocs and zooanthropes. I knew it wouldn’t be the best since it’d be slow and stationery but since I figured my opponent should play deathguard i pictured a slow moving, resiliant borde matchning against my gunline and it should at least be thematic and a good game. It was basically over turn one.
He killed 1 exocrine and tio hiveguards and I took 4 wounds of Mortarion and then he was ready to charge in to my lines.


I knew Deathguard got som buffs but this was insane! 
I have been around before and I know this feeling of ”all the other armies are better, we don’t have a chance”. But seriussly: What can we do now? 
Tha dammage output he had was on pair with Marines and I realize all the New Codexes have taken leaps. Is it better to go back to covid isolation and hope that somebody tells me when cult or nids get a codex?

First of all, how much terrain dif you use on the board?

Well, sounds like you got caught off guard, and when already playing a weaker codex into the newest hotness that will be brutal. Terrain really matters like stated above.

When playing two exos into a shooty army it helps to hide one exo behind obscuring and then stick the gun out and pop stationary strat (and in DG case you are kinda forced to buff them to 3D as well) while the second one goes into strategic reserves for 1 CP to guarantee you can do the same thing turn 2 if the first one gets deleted after shooting. With symbiostorm they do a lot of work (depending on invulns ofc)

12 hive guard is a pretty big points sink for very little extra value (only SMA and symbio on max 1 unit) and not that great into disgustingly resilient. They were great in the past but with DG taking over a lot of the meta with PBCs and -1D vs d3D weapons I am not so sure of their viability anymore

Mortarion is a beast for sure, but it’s still possible to tarpit him with leviathan gants/zoans and either ignore him or grind him down with mortal wounds (or dimas/hierodules in melee, one of our rare sources of reliable 4D+ which is what you need vs DG).

A lot. That was not the isue. I coul hide and still shoot. 



And I played bad and the list was to immobile, i know. But the output of his plagueburscrawlers and terminators was crazy. And the ressiliance of all of them was truly disgusting.

But I’ll get back on it. I’ll try opposit style next time. I have 30 devgaunts that waited on the shelf for a few years ready to come out of a jormtunnel...

Against DG the dev gants and flamer acolytes will not do much unless your opponent is running lots of pox walkers. If Morty is running the stop rerolls trait then you will not kill him as Tyranids without expending all your resources over multiple turns to do so. He will chew through dimacherons fairly quickly but at least they can deal with the PBCs well.
I think your best bet with Morty is to keep him occupied and spread your stuff out. Maybe use warriors with lashwhips and bone swords to stall for a turn.
Otherwise focus on objectives, with Morty 1-2 PBCs and a terminator squad that's a lot of points.

The new DG book really counters what our best units have been, Hiveguard and Exocrine. They make Dmg2 and d3 weapons far less useful. I've swapped my unit of hiveguard to a barbed hierodule partly for that reason. Being of similar stat line of shooting, but at a set Dmg2 and I can use the strat to push him up the dmg3 when needed. Against the new DG you need to either push through with Dmg3+ or drown them in Dmg1 weapons. DG will definitely be a challenge for Nids I think. Morty even more so, Kronos psychic deny will become even more important against him I think.

Morty can be dealt with, 4-5 smites a turn, 2 of those being from zoanthropes at 24 inch range out of deny can do 6 Mortals to him even after DR saves. Shooting him with Tyrannofexes or hitting him with a Dimachaeron or Stonecrusher carnifex after a slingshot from Swarmy doesn the trick. I have played 2 mock games against DG and killed morty turn 2 both games.

Well Morty can deny himself so you can't completely avoid it. Dimacheron 6 attacks 4 hit 2 wound he saves 1 so 5-1 damage and he saves 1-2 meaning you do 3 damage or thereabouts. Now if he's using the droning instead of the ignore reroll trait then it looks better.
So with that in mind I'm quite impressed that you killed him in two turns
