One Step Ahead in 9th Edition

Just wondering how the interaction works in 9th against a unit that charged, since One Step Ahead states the following:


"In each Fight phase, you can pick one friendly KRAKEN unit within 6" of your Warlord. That unit can fight first in the Fight phase, even if it didn’t charge. If the enemy has units that have charged, or that have a similar ability, then alternate choosing units to fight with, starting with the player whose turn is taking place."

The last part of starting with the player whose turn is taking place is what is bugging me, since it was written in 8th where the player whose turn it is would get to select the first non-charging unit to attack, whereas now the other player is the first to select a unit to fight after all the charging units are done. Since the advent of Adaptive Physiologies I haven't really thought about Warlord traits, but in the event that this effectively cancels out the charge advantage in the favor of the player getting charged, this trait looks alot more useful than I thought.

Rare rules:

Some rules allow a unit from your army to always fight
first in the Fight phase, even if they didn't make a charge
move this turn. If the enemy has units that have charged,
or that have similar rules, then alternate selecting units
to fight with from amongst these units, starting with the
player whose turn is taking place.
Similarly, some rules say that a certain unit cannot be
selected to fight in the Fight phase until after all other
eligible units have done so. If both players have units
that cannot fight until after all other units have done
so, then the players alternate selecting which of those
units to fight with, starting with the player whose turn is
taking place.
If a unit is under the effects of both a rule that always
lets it fight first in the Fight phase, and a rule that says it
cannot be selected to fight until after all other units have
done so, it instead fights as if neither rule is affecting it.

Non-active fights first is only the case with stock fight activation. Anything else, and it goes back to active player first. So you can't use it to go before chargers or anything, you'd still fight first off charge if you charged (outside of other fight first/last), and ongoing combats where you got charged are unlikely to matter. Just take an adapt.

Thanks! I missed that snippet in the BRB. I'll stick to the AdPhyses in that case, sad that there aren't any WL traits that seem worth it.

I feel like adaptations would make great buyable upgrades, assuming following trend of SM/Necrons.

But we need good WLTs first...

The current set of adaptations have good potential but really need a bit of a more thought out approach, so that diff options are viable to achieve certain things rather than some being clear standouts (dermic symbiosis is such a clear standout that people want to take it on stuff that already have invuls...)

I feel like taking that ability is a waste of a WLT anyway. It affects one unit that is within 6" of the warlord and HAS to be Kraken. Many games, that situation just will never happen and in the cases where it does, it isn't amazing enough to make up for the situationality of it.

So many of our WLTs are terrible. A few are good to decent, but so many are either situational and lackluster or outright bad. There is a reason most people just take the Adaptive physiology by default.

The case where this warlord trait helps you is on your turn charging somthing that "fights first" or if they heroocly intervene.

The base rules would say that the heroic intervener would go first since its not there active turn and the fight first target would also go forst since the base rules says the not active player choses first to fight.

With this rules wording your chosen unit will supercede those enemy units since the rule specifies that in a tie it starts with the active player, so you.

Alittle niche for sure and not really something you will use every game but does give you an edge against charecter heavy enemies since they will like heroicly intervene if they can and when they do you can show them your trick and kill the character. Still a gimmick though and play groups who are aware of it wont fall for it.

No: HI fights in normal fight order (i.e. fight first goes before it). And fight first starts with active player, same as fights last. It's only unmodified fight order that starts with non-active.

I feel like if it affected ALL Kraken units within 6" of the warlord it might still be not good enough, but at least it would be on my radar as an option. Only affecting 1 isn't enough to build a tactic around and wouldn't impact the game enough to be worth the expenditure of a WLT considering if you are entering a fight phase when you didn't charge, odds are good that warlord won't be around much longer anyway.

Well then yeah the niche is awhole lot smaller then and really shouldnt evan be considered. Im glad i didnt try that yet.
