hi I could use some help narrowing things down

hi guys i'm quite new to playing warhammer but have been watching battle reports for some time now so am ok at the rule side of things. As being new to actually playing, I could use some help when building an army I have a vague idea of what models are good and what not to bring but putting together an entire army is giving some problems as I don't really know what models goes with each other. last Christmas I purchased the battle-box so please keep that in mind as i wouldn't want to the models to go to waste

The easiest way to play with army lists and figure out what is possible is to install 'battlescribe' (phone or pc) and use the 40k files. Once you get used to it, it is a powerful tool for creating army list ideas and working on them as you go.

As for what to build, a lot depends on how many points you want to play with. For small point games, start with a 'Patrol' detachment. Your troops are important, so decide if you want to go with expensive yet resilient warriors, or if you want to just use gants to flood objectives. If you go with gants, take a Broodlord for HQ. If you go with Warriors, consider a Neurothrope or Tyranid Prime.

After you've picked your scoring units, you need to consider units that deal damage. These units need to be able to remove threats, remove enemy scoring units and be resilient enough to require focused fire to remove. The Exocrine and Hive Guard are both excellent options for this. The Exocrine packs a heavy punch on a relatively tough body and for a cheap point price. The Hive Guard hit decently hard but are difficult to kill since they can ignore line of sight, thus staying out of harm's way.

Alternatively, you can go with big melee threats such as the 'Super Flyrant' (a hive tyrant with wings, scythes of tyran from Behemoth and an adaptative physiology called 'Monstrous Size' from the 'Blood of Baal' book), a Dimachaeron (from the latest Forgeworld book called the 'Imperial Armour Compendium') or Scythed Hierodule.

I'd also consider a Lictor or two for objectives. Venomthropes, Malanthrope and/or Maleceptor for support (they provide -1 to hit auras and -1 strength auras).

And the Swarmlord is both a beatstick and a support unit, being able to cast two powers and providing a double move ability called 'Hive Commander'.

That's really all the competitive stuff. You can add some flavor options like Mawlocs or Deathleaper. Or you can go for a 'fun' trash army like Carnifex spam. If your local meta isn't super competitive then play what you think looks cool.

If you wanna use the battleforce btw i'd suggest smth like list i posted below, it's easy to play and fun imo, tho i'm just a casual player

The plan is - big bois kill, small bois hold obj, also swapping out the troops for warriors would be nice, with barbed strangler preferably, since this list cant do a lot to horde armies ( i simply dont have warriors )
